Happy birthday, Bubble Bobble! It was released exactly 40 years ago today, on June 16, 1986. The arcade version was absolutely brilliant, being one of the first games to have a coop-multiplayer option. It was also one of the the most ported arcade games in history, with over 20 ports to home computers and consoles, including even the legendary TI-84 Plus (primarily a calculator). The port that got the highest praise and came closest to the original arcade experience was the C64 version. Excellent graphics, one of the most recognizable tunes , and great gameplay make Bubble Bobble a timeless classic. My brother and I played the crap out of this one back in the day, and we still load it up on my old C64 when he comes for a visit. It's like riding a bike, you never forget how to play Bubble Bobble.

To this day, even 37 years later, the game I associate the most with the Psygnosis logo is Shadow of the Beast. The game itself was fascinating - in the sense that graphics and sound were both perfect 10s, while gameplay was a 3 at best. Maybe I am being a bit harsh, but I think we can all agree that there was a massive gap between how it looked/sounded and how it played. And yet its burned into my memory forever and certainly has its place in gaming history. Psygnosis published around 100 games, but that logo will always give me Shadow of the Beast vibes.

My nephew was browsing through the shelves in my gaming room and asked where I keep the "older games that I played when I was his age" (he's 14 now). I showed him the section from the early 80s. Obviously, he didn't recognize a single game (making me feel quite old, haha), but for some reason Lode Runner caught his attention. I said that it's not a "pretty" game in terms of graphics or sound, but that it was one of my favorites back then. We loaded it up, I showed him for about 2 minutes what to do, and we ended up playing it for almost 3 hours. It made me happy for many reasons, but most of all grateful to see that these old games - despite their shortcomings in graphics and sound - can still fascinate even younger generations. Lode Runner by Brøderbund (1983), a truly timeless gem.

One of the best early 80s games ever is Choplifter, from 1982, developed by Dan Gorlin and published by Broderbund. It also became one of the best selling games ever for the Apple II. I first saw and played this at a friend's house. We had a handrittwen "Highscore" list that we updated over several months, signed by all players present when we played it. One simple rule was that highscores only counted when at least one other person was present and signed it off. I wished that list didn't get lost in time. Early 80s gaming included so many things that don't exist anymore today... handwritten high score lists, drawn dungeon maps, and level codes.

Who here was a fan of Company of Heroes? In terms of RTS games, this is pretty much the last "modern" one I played. Modern might be an odd term for a 20-year-old game (published in 2006), but I grew up with a C64 and M.U.L.E., so anything after 2000 still feels pretty modern to me, even today. I have no idea if current RTS games are more complex or have reverted to simplicity, but Company of Heroes felt right on the edge for me in terms of controls, speed, and frantic decision-making. I generally lean toward turn-based games (dungeon crawlers or strategy/war games), but the adrenaline rush and immersion are stronger in RTS, of course. We used to play this in 8-player LAN mode, and some of us didn’t have headsets - you can imagine the mayhem and chaos when you heard shots, explosions, and voice-overs. Honestly miss that time.
