Open source software is so cool. This is my Rivian R1S being autonomously driven by the Comma 3X—a dashboard mounted device that hijacks the signal to my car’s autonomy computer and inserts its own (much more capable) inputs. The software is free. And getting better daily.

It’s basically imperceptible in road feel. Rivian’s own software does much the same. A sporty coupe this car is not haha

It’s no different from any other ADAS software including even FSD. If you hit someone with this enabled, you’re liable. But no, it doesn’t nullify insurance coverage.

Chip: • Mutli-chip module • TSMC 5nm • Neural engine: Rivian designed • 800+ TOPS • In-house designed software stack "RAP1 powers the company’s third-generation Autonomy computer, the Autonomy Compute Module 3. Key specs include: • 1600 sparse INT8 TOPS • The processing power of 5 billion pixels per second. • RAP1 features RivLink, a low latency interconnect technology allowing chips to be connected to multiply processing power, making it inherently extensible. • RAP1 is enabled by an in-house developed AI compiler and platform software.” Rivian: “In addition to ACM3, Rivian plans to integrate LiDAR into future R2 models. Google Cast in the new Rivian update is so sick and works amazingly well. Basically every app accessible in seconds on my car’s display and controlled via my phone. Way better than browsing on the in-car display like Tesla imo. Great work, Rivian!

Everyone says self-driving needs billions. Comma ai built a very uncomfortable counterexample for $999. That is what makes this story so interesting to me. While Waymo, Cruise, and others spent billions building robotaxis, custom vehicles, and tightly controlled systems, George Hotz took a very different bet: Do not build a new car. Fix the cars people already own. A small aftermarket device. A few cameras. Better code. And an open-source path the industry did not take seriously enough. That is not just a product story. It is a capital-efficiency story. And maybe an ideological one too. Because while big auto keeps building closed, expensive, heavily controlled systems, comma ai is pushing something much more uncomfortable: AI that runs on consumer hardware, improves through community, and does not require a giant corporate gatekeeper. That is why this matters. It challenges one of the laziest assumptions in tech: that hard problems always need giant budgets. Sometimes they need better software, a sharper model, and the courage to ignore the industry playbook. So here is the real question: Will autonomy be owned by a few mega-corps, or built into products ordinary people can actually use and control? #AI #SelfDriving #AutonomousDriving
