Today at Uhuru Park, I met this man sitting all by himself, deep in thought. I approached him and we talked. He shared that life has really been tough he has been searching for a job for a long time without success. Two months ago, his house was locked, and since then, he has been sleeping on the streets. I wanted to help him pay the two months’ rent, but all he asked for was transport money to go back home to the village, where he at least has a place to stay and regroup. I listened and supported him with the fare so he can go home, plan afresh, and hopefully return to Nairobi or anywhere once an opportunity opens up. He is a chef and ready to work. I saw Suzanne break down in one of the most horrendous bout of tears I have ever seen, which she asked me not to air so that people can focus on the issues. Time doesn’t make the grief go away, but it shifts. I still miss Sam every single day and wish he was here but I can’t change that. What I have been doing is donating the proceeds from the tshirt created in memory of Sam to Jae’s Place They have the resources to help those who need it and to encourage genuine check ins with those you love or those you think could use a chat. 10/10 would recommend and I hope one day I can do something in memory of Sam to that extent. Miss you kiddo.
