India–Sri Lanka Cooperation | Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Colombo, 21 January 2026 Under Operation Sagar Bandhu, the Indian Army’s Engineer Task Force has successfully restored critical connectivity in Sri Lanka’s Central Province through the inauguration of the third Bailey Bridge on the B-492 Highway at KM 15 linking Kandy and Nuwara Eliya. The bridge was formally inaugurated by Dr Satyanjal Pandey, Deputy High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka along with Manjula Suraweera Arachchi, Member of Parliament from Nuwara Eliya. The B-492 Highway serves as a vital arterial route between the Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts. Connectivity along this stretch had remained disrupted for over a month following extensive damage caused by Cyclone Ditwah, severely affecting mobility, supply chains and access to essential services for local communities. The rapid construction and commissioning of the Bailey Bridge under India’s Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief framework has restored a crucial lifeline for the region, enabling the resumption of civilian movement and economic activity. This effort reaffirms India’s steadfast commitment to Sri Lanka and underscores the practical implementation of India’s Neighbourhood First Policy, reflecting enduring partnership, solidarity and timely assistance in times of crisis.

An Indian Air Force C-130J aircraft ✈️ arrived in Sri Lanka today carrying a new consignment of humanitarian relief including 5 tonnes of essential medical supplies. A heartfelt thank you to the Indian Air Force (IAF) for strengthening Operation Sagar Bandhu and standing with Sri Lanka during this critical time. 🇮🇳🇱🇰 Indian Air Force India in Sri Lanka Sri Lanka in India Sri Lanka Air Force Narendra Modi MFA SriLanka 🇱🇰 Nalinda Jayatissa Vijitha Herath The shipment includes approximately 4 tonnes of BHISHM modular trauma cubes and around 5 tonnes of essential medical supplies requested by the Sri Lankan Ministry of Health. An Indian Air Force medical team also arrived onboard. The BHISHM trauma cubes are rapid-deployment, durable mobile primary health units equipped with diagnostic tools and compact surgical stations, designed specifically for disaster-response situations.
