#Ebola update: more than 1000 confirmed cases have been reported in #DRC, including 254 deaths. 100 patients have recovered so far, which shows that for many, the virus can be stopped with timely health care. In the past month, World Health Organization (WHO), Africa CDC and partners have supported Ministère de la Santé RDC to increase the number of Ebola Treatment Centres and lab and surveillance capacities, to train more health workers on clinical care and infection prevention and control, and to improve the understanding and involvement of communities. But much more is needed: more treatment centres, more trained health and care workers, more testing, more teams from within communities supporting communities. We need sustained and safe access to reach all affected people. We need continued solidarity from international community to end this outbreak. And ultimately, we need peace for the people of DRC.

US Donates Computers to Military Health Facilities By Mwila Nsofu The United States Government has provided 264 computers to 60 military health facilities nationwide to support the rollout of the SmartCare Pro programme. The SmartCare Pro programme aims to digitise record management in military facilities and improve the efficient delivery of health services. In furtherance of His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Renewed Hope Agenda, and in line with our national commitment to achieving Universal Health Coverage (#UHC), I am pleased to provide an update on Nigeria’s progress in expanding access to quality and affordable health insurance. Out-of-pocket payments remain the dominant source of health care expenditure for most of our people, translating into higher costs and lower standards of accountability for providers. When the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare Federal Ministry of Health, NIGERIA signed the Renewed Hope Ministerial Performance Monitoring Bond with its detailed key performance indicators, we set ambitious 2030 targets that are now within reach, one of which is national health insurance coverage. Under the leadership of Mr President, all macroeconomic reform and cross-sectoral policy direction are driven by one objective: ensuring that every Nigerian can actualize their aspirations while accessing affordable, quality care. This people-centred approach defines the comprehensive reforms now reshaping our health sector. As we modernize infrastructure across primary, secondary, and tertiary facilities in all local government areas, our record-breaking progress in national health insurance enrollment is aligning demand with Nigeria’s rapidly expanding supply of human resources and infrastructure. Nearly 120,000 health workers have been trained since 2023, and 2,500 doctors, nurses, midwives, and community health extension workers have been recruited to strengthen frontline services. Over the past 16 months, 4,000 health personnel have also been added in Federal Tertiary Hospitals to close workforce gaps. In 2024, Nigeria broke its enrollment record with more than 2.4m new people insured, bringing total coverage to about 20m Nigerians. With new policy tools in motion, we are on course to reach 44m by 2030. This is the surest path to reducing out-of-pocket expenditure, which still represents about 70% of total health spending. Social health insurance schemes now account for 90% of all enrollments nationwide. A major constraint in care quality has been the low capitation fee for enrollees. For years, the capitation stood at ₦750 per person. We have doubled it to ₦1,450 to ensure providers are properly equipped to deliver consistent, high-quality care. Fee-for-service rates have also been increased by 380%, based on actuarial evidence aligning cost-reflective rates with quality requirements. The Federal Government Government of Nigeria has also introduced the One Hour Referral Authorization Code, issued by the insuring entity to the provider to confirm referral approval. By shortening this process to 1 hour, we are eliminating unnecessary delays and ensuring that patients move quickly from primary to specialist care. To strengthen accountability, I have directed the National Health Insurance Authority NHIA NIGERIA to commence covert mystery shopping to monitor providers and ensure that enrollees are not denied treatment. Undercover monitors are already observing processes in facilities nationwide to ensure that insured Nigerians receive timely and dignified care. The evidence is clear. From fewer than 10m hospital visits in all of 2023, more than 46m visits were recorded by the second quarter of 2025. Reforms in the Basic Health Care Provision Fund Basic Health Care Provision Fund and the NHIA are delivering measurable gains in patient confidence and service utilization. As enrollment expands, benefits multiply. Wider adoption of health insurance enhances quality, strengthens accountability, and protects households from financial hardship. These achievements reflect President Tinubu’s vision of a health system that serves all Nigerians, regardless of income or status. We will continue to modernize infrastructure, strengthen the workforce, and sustain reforms until every Nigerian is covered and cared for. Today, World Health Organization (WHO) cancelled a planned mission to Al-Awda hospital and the central drug store in northern #Gaza for the fourth time since 26 Dec because we did not receive deconfliction and safety guarantees. The mission planned to move urgently needed medical supplies to sustain the operations of five hospitals in the north, including Al-Awda. It has now been 12 days since we were last able to reach northern Gaza. Heavy bombardment, movement restrictions, and interrupted communications are making it nearly impossible to deliver medical supplies regularly and safely across Gaza, particularly in the north. Most hospitals are severely short-staffed, as health workers have left due to evacuation orders or insecurity. Meanwhile, patients' access to health facilities is impeded by perilous conditions. Without adequate health care, the suffering in Gaza is growing each hour. Dr. Mohamed Obied, Orthopedic Consultant at Al-Awda Hospital explains the challenges amputees face ⬇️ 🔹Injured people are often only able to reach doctors days or weeks after they’ve been hurt, sometimes with severe infections, reducing the possibility of saving their limbs. 🔹 Health facilities don’t have the specialised health workers medicines or equipment these injuries require. 🔹Doctors face the hard choice to perform above-knee rather than below-knee amputations. I’m incredibly excited to say our new and improved Confidence in the Menopause education course is now live for everyone to access! As many of you will be aware, menopause education is so important - it’s what’s going to make menopause care and treatment better for women globally - but unfortunately, it’s massively undervalued, underfunded and under resourced. Our Confidence in the Menopause course has already been downloaded by more than 30,000 healthcare professionals worldwide since 2021, and I’m so proud to say the new version launched today will have tailored modules available for everyone, whether you work in healthcare or not. Menopause is everyone’s business, so whether you work in healthcare, you’re going through menopause yourself or know someone who is, this course will allow you to access evidence-based information to help support yourself and others. There are a number of free to access presentations and, for the more in-depth modules, there is a small subscription fee that will be used to fund further hormone health education and research. This past year has seen our coalition of more than 225 grassroots organisations go from strength to strength! Iran: Three weeks into the conflict, our colleagues in Tehran share how they and their loved ones are coping. While our clinics in Kerman and Mashhad have largely remained open, activities at our South Tehran clinic were temporarily suspended due to the bombing. For many of our colleagues, one of the hardest parts has been not being able to continue caring for their patients. Our programmes in Iran focus on supporting vulnerable communities. Following recent authorisation to strengthen support to local health systems in the current context, we’re preparing to reopen our Tehran clinic as a more specialised facility for emergency care. Initial donations have already been delivered to the national emergency response, and we stand ready to scale up as needs evolve. We stand in solidarity with our colleagues in Iran, whose commitment to patients remains unwavering.
