Played Kingdoms of the Dump for 30 hours, here is my review: -The game is a loving homage to classic SNES RPGs like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy, perfectly capturing their atmosphere -A tactical turn-based combat system with active elements, reminiscent of Super Mario RPG or more recently Expedition 33 -One of the most unique settings ever in an RPG -Incredible variety of enemies, all beautifully rendered in pixel art (boss design by Look Outside pixel artist) -The game is divided into multiple acts, taking you through a wide variety of regions and kingdoms -It’s full of charm and incredible attention to detail. Heal with rotting items, fight flying jellyshorts, and save using toilet paper rolls on toilets. Just lovely. -Fun fact: Game is made by 2 real janitors -The original soundtrack is an absolute banger, instantly transporting you back to the SNES era -There’s a Mode 7-style overworld that you can explore on foot, on a mount, or by airship -The overworld invites exploration and is packed with secrets and hidden areas -What brings the game into the modern era is a dedicated jump button. You can jump pretty much anywhere and explore the world on entirely new levels -There are also various characters, each with unique abilities outside of combat, and you can switch between them at any time -Characters are just lovely -The game is wonderfully written and well paced, full of great story moments and twists, but it’s only available in English at the moment -I would compare the difficulty to Chrono Trigger. It’s challenging but never unfair, and grinding is never necessary -If you die in a battle, you can retry it immediately -Enemies are visible before battle and can be avoided -Fast battles, quick in and out -Various battle themes -Fallen characters and those outside your active party still gain experience -The game is pure indie at heart, over eight years in the making and packed with content -Lots of side quests -Dedicated character quests that explore each character’s backstory -Secret weapons and bosses -Dungeons with puzzle elements -25 hours of story content (more with side stuff) -Only 20 bucks (discount right now) -Great on Steam Deck -Full controller support -Sometimes the jumping sections demand too much precision -I ran into a few bugs during my playtime. The game froze, I got stuck in walls, the music sometimes cut out, and I wasn’t able to use an item at one point -I reached out to the developers, and they have already responded with multiple updates Kingdoms of the Dump is a love letter to an era that produced some of the greatest RPGs of all time. It’s a modern classic, only held back by some technical issues. For me, it’s the best SNES game that was never actually released on a Super Nintendo. DarkCoinDAO DarkCoinDAO 🤝 #rxelms We’re building a basic first person shooter to keep the #community entertained while we build the rxelms. People will only be able to select NFT based characters if they own the corresponding NFT. The rxelms FPS mini game will allow for community made, NFT based weapons, weapon skins and poses/emotes. We’ll provide documentation and guides on how the community can take part in the creation of these items. People who don’t own an NFT from a rxelms partner project will be able to select a humanoid character. We plan on working with NFT project leads/managers and the community in general to develop unique characteristics for the in-game play style of each character, things like special weapons, speed, agility, strength, etc. Over-time we hope this will create a fun, fair and competitive #game. Maybe those #MNGO/Vlad, limited edition sneakers make you run a little faster in the FPS. The FPS will also have a play to earn aspect. Project managers will be given the option to allow their #rxelm to be used as a map for the FPS, we may look at ways to add another revenue stream for partner projects by giving them a cut of any token exchanges that occur through the #FPS mini-game. It is 100% on-chain generative art using three.js code via HTML ⬢ OCBTW can only be minted by swapping a Panda using the 2:70104 smart contract. After 200 swaps have been completed, on a first-come-first-served basis, the mint will conclude. The Sabotaging Practice of Over Supply and Sameness in the NFT Space. The current zeitgeist of the NFT space is that the same artists are doing the same kind of work five times a year, with project after project leaving a trail of disappointment and discontent among collectors and all of us watching in disbelief as huge resources are extracted from the space over work that feels like it could be left as an "artist study." I understand that you can do what you want with your money as collectors, but we are killing the whole space with this incestuous practice. No artist is that prolific to be able to do 5 collections of 100+ pieces each every year and actually deliver innovation and some kind of creative evolution. Of course, they can pretend play that the work has something new, but there is no precedent nor proof that that has ever happened in the speed that it happens in the NFT space. Again, people are free to through away their resources on whatever they want but with this way of doing things, we more and more are going to start seeing the consequences. Oh! There are consequences? Yes. Maybe unintended, but there are. Let's see. Let's start with the loss of belief in the NFT space as somewhere where emerging artists can come and find support for their experiments. Why even bother to bring experiments, innovation, and new ways to think of art on the blockchain if the same people have all the collectors hypnotized with their magical flutes? Why even try to come to a space where taking risks and challenging the status quo (the mission of art!!!) is overlooked? This makes the NFT space a social club and not a space for art. I guess it is fine, but IMO it is a recipe for disaster. New collectors stay away because the art will slowly but surely become stale and un-challenging. Why even bother to come and see what is happening here if you can't, as a collector, see new weird and up-and-coming artists? The amount of noise emitted by the same artists doing the same art over and over, drowns out any new voices. Again. A recipe for disaster. The NFT space is becoming a space of disappointment and doubt. We think that collections going to zero one after the other, over and over, is not damaging? I feel we are kidding ourselves. Disappointment piles up, and again, the people who will hurt are the emerging artists, the new blood, the ones who are willing to risk the most and, in return, put fire in this cold space of sameness. I love this space—don't get me wrong—it has changed my life, and I believe it has a ton of potential, but things need to change for it to become a beacon of light in art. But we need to support new voices. We need to support new ideas. The challenge is huge. I hope to contribute all I can to this change. I hope more and more see how exciting it is to go out and try to discover what else is out there and move this space forward. But again, I understand the leaps of faith needed, but if there is a space that is based on that, it's the NFT space...so there is hope. We will see. 📺by Boldtron

Talking with someone the other day that estimated they had about 25,000 idle connections to Postgres. My actual response to them: "holy shit". They double checked, it was only about 12,000 Same day had a conversation with someone saying they didn't need pgbouncer because of activerecord's connection pooling. Let's dig into connection pooling in Postgres. Prior to Postgres 14 every connection to the database consumed memory, roughly 10MB, it may be slightly less but it still wasn't free. Even beyond Postgres 14 there is still various contention that happens when Postgres starts to use a connection. An application pooler maintains a set of connections and hands them out when needed on the application side. These are idle and real connections against the database that indeed do impact performance negatively. In contrast pgbouncer speaks the wire protocol, waits for the begin part of the transaction and then uses a connection. It more strictly manages how many idle ones it's having instead of per web server you're running. pgbouncer up until recently really needed to be run in transaction mode (which meant disabling prepared statements in your application framework). prepared_statement support in pgbouncer was added recently, and now you don't have to disable. Even when running with an older version of pgbouncer with prepared_statements disabled you'd still see a big performance gain. A quick check to know if you'd benefit from pgbouncer, run this query: SELECT count(*), state FROM pg_stat_activity GROUP BY 2; If you're idle account is high (yes this is dependent on your view, but to me if it's above 25-30 range, and especially if active is until half that) then you'd already start to benefit from pgbouncer. If it's at 10,000 then post haste get pgbouncer in place. Finally, you don't have to not use a framework pooler, they're fine, but don't think it replaces a native Postgres connection pooler.

Most of the issues I have with it can be fixed through future updates. If you were a fan of the second phase games, you will undoubtedly enjoy it. If you didn't have any interest in them, Shadows might change your mind. SCORE: 9/10

Hills I will die on as an elementary school teacher, who just wrapped up my 32nd year teaching! 1. If you are not PASSIONATE about blessing, serving, and empowering those you are blessed to teach, this profession is not for you. 2. Our students are not “ours”. They are their families, and we need to understand the magnitude of the calling, and responsibility we have to meet them where they are, and to help them to get to a place that they never thought possible. 3. As important as the curriculum is (and it IS important), the children in our classroom are what matter most. It’s our JOB to teach the curriculum to SERVE our students, NOT to use our students to push any sort of agenda. 4. Just as we teach our students to “leave things better than they found them”, we need to leave our students better than they were when they first entered into our classroom. Never let a day pass without pouring into each and every child. 5. We should not teach our children WHAT to think, but HOW to think, and how to use that knowledge to bless and serve not only themselves, but the world around them. 6. Our words carry little (or NO value), if we do not practice what we preach. 7. If we don’t make learning fun, children will view learning as a chore, and we we will be creating a generation of children who grow up to be young adults who don’t see the joy in learning new things. 8. The child that may be “difficult to reach/teach” (the one who may get on your last nerve more than you could ever imagine), is someone’s EVERYTHING. Get to know them as human beings, find out what motivates them, and do everything you can to help them to thrive. 9. Never tell a child they “can’t” do something. God has blessed each of them with far more strengths and talents than we may know, and it’s not our job to tell them what they can’t do, but to help them to realize all the things they CAN do. 10. The legacy you leave as a teacher will never be determined by your student’s test scores, but by the human beings you helped them become throughout their lives.

How long should my baby use a pacifier? I get this question a lot and it’s a tough one - both because there isn’t a single correct answer and because (like feeding and sleep) the topic brings out lots of strong opinions. But if you ask me, the family in this video has the right idea. Infants are born with a strong sucking reflex and pacifiers can help them to soothe and sleep. There’s even some evidence to suggest that sleeping with pacifiers might reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). In short: for babies (up to a year), I’m a big fan. But it’s not uncommon to see children with pacifiers well into toddlerhood, and in some cases, even beyond. And here I’d raise some important cautions. Children who rely heavily on pacifiers may be more prone to middle ear infections. And dentists note that prolonged pacifier use can affect your child’s teeth and create bite issues. Perhaps most importantly is their potential to impact expressive language development. Your child’s ability to speak is an important one. After a point, language shapes not only the content of our thinking, but the very structure of our cognition. By otherwise occupying the mouth over long periods of time, pacifiers may slow language development by limiting opportunities for expression. Speaking with a pacifier in the mouth can also lead to distortion of speech sounds (even when they aren’t in the mouth). All told, I’m an advocate for beginning to wean off of pacifiers at around a year of age - which is why this video spoke to me. We see an infant appropriately using one and big sister demonstrating her expressive language, her mouth unencumbered and free to chatter away happily. The transition can be difficult - but not nearly as challenging as for a child who has become dependent over a period of years. Do/did you use pacifiers with your child? Why or why not? But the math involved is extremely complex, literally, involving a summation over a complex number term e^(-iwt). I developed this exercise to demonstrate that underneath such complexity, DFT is just a series of matrix multiplications you can calculate by hand. ✍️ Once you see that, it should not surprise you that a deep neural network, which is also a series of matrix multiplications, with activation functions in-between, can learn to perform DFT to process and analyze signals so effectively. How does DFT work? [1] Given ↳ Signals A, B, and C in the 🟧 frequency domain: ◦ A = cos(w) + 2cos(2w) ◦ B = cos(w) + cos(3w) + cos(4w) ◦ C = -cos(2w) + cos(3w) ◦ Each signal is a weighed sum of four cosine waves at frequencies 1w, 2w, 3w, and 4w. ◦ We will apply Inverse DFT to convert the signals to time domain representations, and then demonstrate DFT can convert back to their original frequency domain representations. ↳ Signal X in the 🟩 time domain. 🚨 THE BIGGEST BOTTLENECK IN AI ISN'T COMPUTING POWER ANYMORE IT'S MOVING DATA. Instead of laying new cables, Chinese researchers have upgraded existing fiber infrastructure by doing two things at once: Using three wavelength bands (C + L + S) instead of the usual two. Using four cores inside each fiber instead of one. Each core acts like an independent highway, and each band acts like an extra lane on that highway. Together, they’ve reportedly increased transmission capacity per core by nearly 50% and overall data throughput by up to 5×. This matters enormously for AI. Modern AI clusters move terabits of data per second between thousands of GPUs. The biggest bottleneck is often not the chips themselves, but moving data fast enough between them. If you can push 5× more data through the same physical cables, you can train bigger models faster and reduce network congestion. Why this is significant: • It shows multi-core + extended spectrum technology moving from labs into real-world commercial use • The system has already run over 35 km of existing telecom network • It could be especially useful for submarine cables and large-scale data center interconnects • China is also eyeing it for its “Eastern Data, Western Computing” project The deeper implication: We’re reaching the physical limits of how much data we can push through single-core fibers using traditional methods. By combining spatial multiplexing (multiple cores) with spectral multiplexing (more wavelength bands), engineers are finding new ways to keep scaling bandwidth without having to dig up the planet to lay new cables. This kind of breakthrough is quiet but foundational it’s the kind of infrastructure upgrade that will determine how fast AI and cloud computing can actually grow in the coming years. The future of data movement might not require more cables. It might just require smarter ones. We’re excited to introduce ShinkaEvolve: An open-source framework that evolves programs for scientific discovery with unprecedented sample-efficiency. Blog: Code: Like AlphaEvolve and its variants, our framework leverages LLMs to find state-of-the-art solutions to complex problems, but using orders of magnitude fewer resources! Many evolutionary AI systems are powerful but act like brute-force engines, burning thousands of samples to find good solutions. This makes discovery slow and expensive. We took inspiration from the efficiency of nature. ‘Shinka’ (進化) is Japanese for evolution, and we designed our system to be just as resourceful. On the classic circle packing optimization problem, ShinkaEvolve discovered a new state-of-the-art solution using only 150 samples. This is a big leap in efficiency compared to previous methods that required thousands of evaluations. We applied ShinkaEvolve to a diverse set of hard problems with real-world applications: 1/ AIME Math Reasoning: It evolved sophisticated agentic scaffolds that significantly outperform strong baselines, discovering an entire Pareto frontier of solutions trading performance for efficiency. 2/ Competitive Programming: On ALE-Bench (a benchmark for NP-Hard optimization problems), ShinkaEvolve took the best existing agent's solutions and improved them, turning a 5th place solution on one task into a 2nd place leaderboard rank in a competitive programming competition. 3/ LLM Training: We even turned ShinkaEvolve inward to improve LLMs themselves. It tackled the open challenge of designing load balancing losses for Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) models. It discovered a novel loss function that leads to better expert specialization and consistently improves model performance and perplexity. ShinkaEvolve achieves its remarkable sample-efficiency through three key innovations that work together: (1) an adaptive parent sampling strategy to balance exploration and exploitation, (2) novelty-based rejection filtering to avoid redundant work, and (3) a bandit-based LLM ensemble that dynamically picks the best model for the job. By making ShinkaEvolve open-source and highly sample-efficient, our goal is to democratize access to advanced, open-ended discovery tools. Our vision for ShinkaEvolve is to be an easy-to-use companion tool to help scientists and engineers with their daily work. We believe that building more efficient, nature-inspired systems is key to unlocking the future of AI-driven scientific research. We are excited to see what the community builds with it!
