If a job needs doing then people should be paid properly to do it.

Here's an idea guys - advocate for proper local authority funding to hire ground maintenance workers, instead of turning community service into a form of indentured servitude that only poorer parts of society will ever be asked to do. Thanks, and go fuck yourselves.

Most households on UC are in work. Do these people now have to do a second job picking litter too?

Because that is slave labour. Forced into work for little income. Furthermore, when would the unemployment have a chance to look for job roles and attend interviews? There is a stigma on unemployment and with the rise of AI, in your world you'd be overrun with litter pickers.

I agree but I do have a couple of issues here. 1. A great many people on UC are also working full time. 2. Where does the rubbish go when the council won't touch it? 3. Who pays for the supervisors? 4. Isn't community service a punishment? So, what would then replace that?

Are you including the 40% of people in receipt of UC who are in work but whose low wages mean public money is used to subsidise profits and shareholder dividends? How about we got those shareholders who benefit from public subsidies for low wages to pick up the litter?

You look like your about to be claiming your pension soon. How about we make you pick litter for the money young people give you. Pension is just a benefit after all

Why not go even further and employ them? Pay them a decent wage whilst your at it.

Copying and pasting what I put on Jeremy Vines post about this but it needs to be asked/said. 👇 Several questions spring to mind. 1, Would steps be taken to make sure that it is 100% accessible to all disabilities and those with certain needs? 2, What if someone was severely unwell that entire month due to an illness or disability and was unable to take part? 3, If that person had a carer, would the carer also be forced to take part? 4, Would those on LCWRA be exempt due to disability and illness or would they also be made to take part? If benefits and litter picking are tied together then that would mean it would not be an optional task. Those on benefits are not on them because they chose to be, in fact, many disabled people would love not to be on benefits. Yes it is only 4 hours a month but not many people have that time with how many hospital appointments or with their illnesses or disabilities flaring up can manage to always have 4 hours free.

So you want to make unemployment a crime?! Currently those on Probation are required to do litter picking. Are you suggesting unemployment is a crime like assaulting someone, dealing drugs, stealing a car or from a house? Arbeit macht frei...

Unemployed claimants are required to spend most of their time jobseeking - it's in the contract. Forced labour destroys real, paid, jobs, of course.

People on benefits want help getting paid employment, not being punished or forced to do unpaid work. Your suggestion is literally rubbish. Try harder.

Or you could be sensible and ask two questions. 1) where is the tax money going that is spent for this? 2) who is making the mess.

This is modern slavery. If you need litter pickers, councils can hire people and actually pay them. Many people on benefits already work full time on pitiful wages. The rest are disabled people. Neither group should be punished for any of this or exploited. So no, GFY
