Does the polling pressure bother Trump? Immediate pressure — probably not. Long term — yes. But he doesn’t have to run again. It’s not clear he actually cares if Republicans win the midterms. He’s doing what he wants. But here’s what I think IS getting to him. Viktor Orbán losing over the weekend. And look at the comments about the Pope. The comments about Islam. They’re unpresidential — though at this point that’s not surprising. When Trump starts tipping over into that level of outlandishness — the unhinged tweets, the random attacks — that’s not strength. That’s pressure coming out sideways. Watch the behavior. It tells you everything about what’s happening internally.
