Peter Thiel on longevity and if humans could live forever: "Computers can live forever." "I wouldn't find it acceptable to be uploaded into a computer program that simulated me. I don't think it would be me." " I tend to think our identity's very wrapped up in our physical...

a good quick easy book on the issue of this personal identity question, applied to this technological possibility of life after death (from 1978)

That distinction between preserving a mind and merely simulating one is fascinating. As AI makes digital continuity more plausible, the harder question may be whether identity lives in the substrate—or in the pattern that persists across it.

Surviving death by machine is one thing but…. Achieving the human longevity escape velocity is right around the corner. Give AI a bit more time to be tasked with finding a solution and speeding up the research process a bit. It’s time to gain a year for each that passes and essentially age backwards.

I agree, our physical bodies are part of who we are.

Immortality would be somewhat horrific if you take it far enough out. Bodies. Over crowding. Ai already discovered the limiting of our epistemology in 2035 etc... realistically, a mind kept? How would a machine keep that secret of no consequence or silly memory of a blade of grass you glanced at a festival when you were 14? There is so much more to us. The random things that are only you, that barely matter but that they are an inescapable part you. Are we so out of touch with ourselves that we are begging to be replaced? Let's figure that out before we insist on getting all transcendent (on a first version at that). Reel it in and let the machines be what they are even when aren't sure what next will be just yet. Let it play out. We will be fine but Ai is not going to save us from human nature. However, there are most likely answers to be had that will change how we understand ourselves if we are willing to allow it.

Yes' computers could live forever; what would you say if I told you consciousness never dies. That consciousness transcends biological form depending on your purpose: to think in the physical, is to limit one's own intellectual ability.
