That sounds just like the sound I've heard tracks make when there's a train approaching from quite a distance...I always think it sounds like a sci-fi battle.

Has anyone tried this with a paper or card cup? We can't use any polystyrene in school due to allergies.

I think this is far more about accoustical coupling than amplification. True, passive amplification always involves coupling, but it is often accompanied with wave shaping in which energy is redirected into modes, the sounds we come to hear.
