In preparation for completing pilot-on-board transition flights, our team conducted rigorous failure injection testing on our aircraft, to validate the layers of resilience we've built into our aircraft. Pilot readiness isn't often talked about, but it's one of the most critical paths to commercial service. This timelapse shows a key piece of that work coming together: our CAE-built full-motion simulator, installed at Joby's flight test facility. Designed as a digital twin of our aircraft, these high-fidelity simulators provide a means of compliance and a robust tool to help prepare our pilots for the demands of high-volume operations in urban environments. From crated components to a fully assembled rig, and soon, the environment where Joby pilots will train for electric air taxi operations.

No traditionally crewed, fixed-wing aircraft has ever flown autonomously in commercial revenue service. We're targeting New Zealand in 2027. Our goal is for Merlin to be the first company to do that with real autonomy on real planes flying real routes in revenue-generating operations. We've been operating a flight test center in Kerikeri since 2022, logging hundreds of autonomous flights with Merlin Pilot, the same system we're certifying with New Zealand's CAA on a concurrent validation pathway with the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). We're now approaching the final phases of that certification journey. Many of the companies attempting to commercialize autonomous flight are using custom-built eVTOL airframes or remote operators. We're doing it the hard way, on fixed-wing aircraft with autonomy in the cockpit, because we believe that's what the future of aviation actually looks like.

While the pilot operates the aircraft, our team monitors from the telemetry trailer, gathering holistic aircraft data like engine temperatures, airspeed, and battery levels. Each part of the aircraft is represented, with members from the battery, engine, propellor, flight control systems, guidance navigation & controls, and flight test instrumentation teams gathering data and monitoring real-time performance during flight. This test data helps to validate aircraft performance across mission profiles, supporting safe flights and preparing us for public operations.

A pilot on Frontier Airlines Flight 124 flying from Montego Bay, Jamaica to Atlanta called air traffic control on Wednesday to request law enforcement at the gate after a female passenger on board threatened to stab other travelers. The plane landed safely at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Airlines have reported more than 640 unruly passenger incidents so far in 2026.

Over the past few months, our Midnight program has consistently delivered strong results. We're now routinely flying longer, faster & higher as we expand the aircraft’s operational envelope. Recent flights have exceeded 55 miles, more than 30 minutes of flight time, altitudes up to our 10,000-foot service ceiling, and speeds in excess of 150 miles per hour. These missions are providing valuable certification data, while closely mirroring the majority of mission profiles we expect in early urban deployment environments. Our next flight test phase with Midnight will be piloted VTOL, including full transition flights with our type certification intent four-blade aft propellers. Unlike the CTOL envelope that we are now close to completing testing on, the VTOL and transition flight regimes are not new for Midnight, as we have previously completed an extensive flight test campaign with Midnight without a pilot onboard. Our progression from non-piloted VTOL to piloted CTOL to piloted VTOL & CTOL campaigns is optimized for safety and disciplined execution that builds our readiness for commercial operations. The momentum continues to grow, and the team continues to deliver.

On July 27, 2007, two news helicopters collided and crashed live on air while filming a police pursuit. The video below captures the exact moment the collision occurred. The two aircraft carried a total of four individuals on board. Pilot Craig Smith and photographer Rick Krolak from KNXV-TV, and pilot Scott Bowerbank and photographer Jim Cox from KTVK. Tragically, all four were killed in the incident. There were no reported casualties on the ground. The investigation into the crash concluded that "...the probable cause of this accident was both pilots' failure to see and avoid the other helicopter.”
