Our hybrid-electric aircraft has reached a major milestone. Vertical takeoff, transition onto the wing, and sustained cruise. This aircraft has the potential to be more efficient than a helicopter and to cruise faster. It shares an airframe, avionics, and flight control system with our all-electric air taxi, demonstrating how different powertrains can be integrated into one VTOL platform. As we plan to welcome FAA pilots into our all-electric VTOL, this milestone underscores the rapid pace of development and the adaptability of our platform to meet evolving market demand.

APRIL 14, 2025 // EDWARDS AFB We shut off motors, actuators, and batteries mid-flight—on purpose. In preparation for completing pilot-on-board transition flights, our team conducted rigorous failure injection testing on our aircraft, to validate the layers of resilience we've built into our aircraft. In every case, our aircraft kept flying safely and landed vertically with no change to pilot procedures. 🎥 Watch the film to see actual footage from the tests.

The Joby electric air taxi is available to fly in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, so we put together an overview of how to fly the aircraft using one of our planned service routes as an example: JFK Airport to Downtown Manhattan (JRB). In this video, Joby software engineer and private pilot William Shen explores the Joby aircraft's unique design and flight controls, its implementation into MSFS 2024, and offers some tips and tricks for pilots to enjoy flying the aircraft in-game.

TRANSITION FLIGHT | Midnight has completed transition flight at a speed of 100+ MPH – taking off vertically, accelerating until it transitions from thrust-borne to wing-borne flight, cruising on the wing and then landing again vertically. Over the past few months, our Midnight program has consistently delivered strong results. We're now routinely flying longer, faster & higher as we expand the aircraft’s operational envelope. Recent flights have exceeded 55 miles, more than 30 minutes of flight time, altitudes up to our 10,000-foot service ceiling, and speeds in excess of 150 miles per hour. These missions are providing valuable certification data, while closely mirroring the majority of mission profiles we expect in early urban deployment environments. Our next flight test phase with Midnight will be piloted VTOL, including full transition flights with our type certification intent four-blade aft propellers. Unlike the CTOL envelope that we are now close to completing testing on, the VTOL and transition flight regimes are not new for Midnight, as we have previously completed an extensive flight test campaign with Midnight without a pilot onboard. Our progression from non-piloted VTOL to piloted CTOL to piloted VTOL & CTOL campaigns is optimized for safety and disciplined execution that builds our readiness for commercial operations. The momentum continues to grow, and the team continues to deliver.

Here's a look at recent ruddervator operational testing on our fusetail. Our engineers load the tail structure to conditions beyond what our aircraft is ever expected to experience in real world operations, then move the control surfaces through their full range of motion to confirm they perform as designed. It's one of many tests validating our aircraft's design on the path to certification. The show goes on and so does the work. 👏

Taking off from the Toyota Technical Center in Higashi-Fuji, we were able to demonstrate the low acoustic footprint of our aircraft and welcome guests including Akio Toyoda, Chairman of Toyota Motor Corporation, Ted Ogawa, CEO of Toyota North America, and Hiroki Nakajima, CTO. We’re incredibly grateful to be working side-by-side with the world’s largest automaker as we realize our shared vision for the future of mobility and look forward to taking the next step on our journey together.
