BEING TOO UNSELFISH CAN HURT YOUR TEAM We want players to be unselfish, put the team first, and do whatever it takes to get the win. However, we do have players that are unselfish to a fault. Meaning they miss opportunities to score or create for themselves. They think they are doing what’s best for the team, but in reality they are hurting their team bc they are passing up on the best opportunity. Be unselfish, but understand the times that you need to get yours!

INVEST IN MANAGERS Student managers at high majors are so valuable to the team, not only from a work standpoint but also with the energy they bring. Often times they are the ones rebounding for players and helping them get their extra work in. I feel like the more programs can invest in their managers to grow on the development side… it will help their players maximize their extra work and also build better managers.

STOP PLANTING FOOT ON YOUR SHOT One thing to keep an eye on when you are repping spot shots, is planting one foot and then just stepping in with the other. It’s unrealistic to think you’ll be able to catch the ball like that in a game, and it kills your momentum to the basket.

THE ANSWER TO ADAM SILVER.. Basketball is a simple game… the teams that dominate SIMPLE, have the most success. What Europe does extremely well for their players, is give them a SOLID FOUNDATION of understanding team basketball, give them freedom to build their Individual Skill, and make every game Meaningful Something. That Foundation is simple to teach, we don’t do a good job of it in America. In top of that, when players don’t do the little things, we don’t hold them accountable to them. When the best ones get to the next level where their talent/skill is even, they can’t get on the floor or impact winning bc of this. By sheer numbers we’ll always have Size/Speed/Athleticism and Skill to choose from. Build these players with Stronger TEAM FOUNDATIONS, hold them accountable to it, and you’ll build AMERICAN BASKETBALL. P.S. the reason this probably won’t happen is the same reason why people won’t watch this full 1:30 video… its boring

EVERYONE LOVES PLAYING WITH PACE As I do my annual deep dive in to players and team stats from this past year, here are some thoughts I’ve had about Pace 1. Doesn’t matter how fast you play offensively if you can’t guard at that Pace defensively 2. Pace should be determined by your personnel 3. To win, you need to take care of the ball, get high value shots, and rebound. Your Pace needs to give you the best chance of being great in these areas 4. Pace in the Halfcourt is more important than overall Pace

Everyone should be playing 3x3 No Dribble The benefits of 3x3 No Dribble are endless. Offensively it’s Turning n Facing on the catch, being strong with the ball, getting open, finding cuts, etc. Defensively it’s digging in and being aggressive, getting in the passing lanes, denying, etc. But the most important reason, is because players STINK AT PASSING AGAINST PRESSURE. This works on that unscripted and in real time. Get to it!!

PRACTICE TO GAME RATIO This is one of the things that is backwards in our country. Yes, you need to play. Yes, you can learn while playing…. But how many High School/College games do you see where players don’t know how to Space, Screen, Execute, Pass, Finish with Both Hands…. We spend our youth years trying to win games and tournaments instead of learning how to play. You can’t get that time back to build your foundation.

SMALL STEPS IN YOUTH DEVELOPMENT So many young 4th/5th/6th grade players. A get exponentially better if they just spend 10 minutes a day working on the simple things. Dribbles, stops, pivots, finishes, footwork, shots, 1v1. They’ll build a crazy strong foundation that they’ll be able to add advanced concepts on as they grow and become more athletic.

WE NEED PASSES THAT DON’T MATTER My college coach used to say this all the time. We need passes that connect our offense, and build rhythm. If every player tries to make a play on every catch, the momentum of the ball stops. A simple way every player can help their offense is by consciously making an effort to keep the ball moving and make ‘passes that don’t matter’ You’ll get the ball back, I promise!!

Struggling with Turnovers Our ability as ballhandlers to stop and see the floor is what helps us relieve pressure. Coming to a stop controls our body, scanning the floor is what helps us decide what action to take next … Pass/Drive/Shot. Here is one of my favorite drills that reinforce this 👍

LEARN TO HANDLE WITH RHYTHM‼️ 👉Ball Handling Flows DAY 1 of 3 Flow: Skips n Pounds, drop to 2 Inside Outs Add: Skips n Pounds, Drop to Inside Out, Cross, Thru Drill 1: Sideline to Sideline repeating the flow Drill 2: Flow in to Mid Paint or Mid Range Shot To get the most out of the flow, we need to handle with strength, change height, and move with pace. Send to someone who could use this 👍👍

If you think you are the best player in the gym…. You probably shouldn’t say your team stinks

SCARED TO COACH YOUR BEST PLAYER? If you are scared to coach your best player because they may leave, you are doing the rest of your players a disservice. Players will leave their HS, AAU, and College teams for a million different reasons. That is the basketball landscape today. But not holding them accountable or coaching them hard isn’t going to stop them from leaving.

MENTALLY TOUGH SHOOTERS The best shooters I have worked with hate missing. They have an obsession with MAKING SHOTS. That’s what makes them great. They also are quick to find solutions when they are missing shots. Yes they still sometimes bitch, complain, kick the ball… but then they find the solution. Pouting about missing shots doesn’t help you become a good shooter, it hinders your growth.
