The Rehbinder effect is a phenomenon in physics that reduces the hardness and ductility of a material by a surfactant film. A surfactant is a substance that lowers the surface tension of a liquid, such as water. When a ceramic cup is submerged in water, the water acts as a surfactant and weakens the bonds between the atoms on the surface of the cup. This makes it easier to pierce the cup with a nail without breaking it.

When the bottle is held still water streams out through the holes because gravity creates pressure inside. But the instant he drops the bottle the leaking stops completely. Bottle and water fall together at the same rate so the water becomes weightless relative to the bottle. It is a perfect demonstration of Einstein’s idea that gravity and acceleration are deeply connected. What feels like weight is often just the result of the frame you are in.
