In Congress, I’m a cosponsor of the Yes In My Backyard Act (YIMBY) bill, which will prioritize federal dollars for communities that reduce the red tape limiting housing construction. I’m also a champion of getting shop class back in junior high. We’ll fix our housing shortage by reducing red tape, building more housing units, and ensuring young people learn the skills they need to build homes right here in Southwest Washington.

You saw my recent video showing low to middle-income homes at Catherine Estates. Today we look at development taking place in other sections of the housing market. While we have made significant strides in providing middle and affordable housing, we recognize the challenges in the low-income and achievable housing markets. That’s why we continue to incentivize development, provide land, and introduce initiatives like the Guaranteed Purchase Programme (GPP) to attract more builders to this sector. We want to see developers build 10,000 homes at a time, bringing houses to market at a much faster rate. With continued investment, capacity-building, and a long-term vision, we will ensure that every Jamaican has access to safe, affordable housing. We are committed to delivering quality housing for Jamaicans under our housing policy and the transformation of Bernard Lodge is just the beginning. As we continue on this journey, we reaffirm our commitment to the people of Jamaica, because under our housing policy, homeownership is a promise we intend to keep.

Housing is the foundation for so many of our needs like attracting and retaining workers, reducing homelessness, and ensuring that families can stay here. This is why we have to be relentless in changing our housing laws at the local and state levels. We’ve made significant progress removing unnecessary processes, reducing housing fees, and getting rid of barriers to new homes. But we have a lot more work to do. With safe, affordable places to call home, we can create a stronger, more resilient and vibrant San Francisco.

🏠 Housing déjà vu! Nothing new in the Fianna Fáil-Fine Gael repackaged housing plan. Nothing to make housing affordable, get rents under control or ramp-up delivery of council homes needed. A generation will remain locked-out of homeownership. Another housing plan for the property funds, corporate landlords and big developers but not for you. We won’t stop fighting for a new direction that makes housing affordable for workers and families.

Housing is a human right. No one in this city should have to worry about losing their home or end up on the streets due to systemic issues. Homelessness and the housing crisis are not two different problems, they are two sides of the same coin. And they have the same solution – permanent affordable housing. Trickle down economics is a fallacy. The market cannot provide affordable housing. Prices are only going up, driving people into homelessness, or out of the city entirely. Rae will build social housing on public lands and speed up housing production citywide, cutting red tape while keeping in place tenant and homeowner protections to ensure that people are able to keep their homes. Rae will streamline the city’s housing strategy, creating a Mayor’s Office of Housing For All to consolidate these different departments under one roof, with a public dashboard to track progress and hold us accountable. This project will deliver quality housing solutions for Jamaican families and increase the supply of homes in this area. Chester Creek forms part of our national housing strategy to expand access to home ownership and support orderly community development. Housing is central to social stability, economic growth, and national development. My Administration remains focused on working with private sector partners to accelerate housing delivery across Jamaica. We will continue to advance projects that provide practical solutions for our people.

I wanted to share this because I have long advocated for modular low cost housing to deal with homelessness and to address the scarcity of affordable housing for those on low incomes. This is a great example of UK business coming together to give something back to the communities in which they operate. I believe that government can learn much from this approach. They should support an expansion of the model. I’m certainly hopeful we will see more examples of this great work. In 2021 Glenveagh were as good as gifted the public land at Oscar Traynor Woods. Today, their profits are up 103%, for every unit they deliver €50,000 is pure profit while their ‘affordable housing’ isn’t affordable and their building standards have resulted in work having to be halted! The private market does not have the capacity or the interest to provide genuinely affordable housing, this is why we need to break with them and end our dependence on profit-driven developers. A state construction company can build genuinely affordable housing because first and foremost it exists to house people, not to make a profit off of peoples housing insecurity. That’s the difference. In 2025 we need a bold and radical housing movement to fight back against the governments failed housing model. There are alternatives. There are solutions. Join PBP and help us build the fight for a future that puts people before profit!

When they were in government the NDP saw waitlists for affordable housing increase by 76%.
