Prototype Do 335 testing in 1943. This was one of (many) good ideas by the Germans late in WW2, combining benefits of two engines into a much sleeker airframe. Not only it was agile, but it was also very fast, reaching nearly 500 mph in level flight.

I’ve only been to a casino twice in my life. It was NOT anything like this. It was very crowded but no one was acting like this, no one was fighting. And a lot of the people were drinking, but again, NO ONE was fighting .

The Vought XF8U-3 Crusader III was an advanced prototype fighter developed in the late 1950s. Capable of reaching nearly Mach 3, it featured massive ventral fins and was conceptually derived from the earlier F8U-1 and F8U-2 Crusaders—though it shared very few actual components with them. Despite its impressive performance, it ultimately lost out to the F-4 Phantom II. The aircraft made its first flight in 1958.

How big it was? The Brabazon, seen here on its first flight in ´49, was roughly the size of a 767, but carrying only 100 pax in a spacious interior (about the interior of a small car). A bean counter's nightmare and one of the reasons it was axed.

Not many pixels left here but still the Northrop XP-56 Black Bullet is an interesting WWII-era experimental fighter prototype. Designed in 1940, It had a tailless pusher design, magnesium alloy airframe, contra-rotating props, 2,000 hp P&W R-2800 engine (substituted for a X-1800 that caused delays). First flight 1943. Planned top speed 465 mph. Two built - first one crashed and which interestingly, the pilot, John Myers, survived with minor injuries which he credited to his innovative wearing of a polo player's helmet. Handling issues and advent of jet engines led to cancellation in 1946. No production. One survives in NASM collection.

Just wow. The Curtiss-Wright XP-55 Ascender was a 1943 prototype fighter that aimed for superior performance but was plagued by dangerous stall characteristics-2 of 3 prototypes crashed during testing. Program was canceled in 1945. The survivor is on display at the Air Zoo.👀
