Rumors of why it was cancelled: During Congressional Hearings about the B-36 a congressman noted that both Curtiss-Wright and Northrop had been informed that "unless they agreed to merge with Consolidated [Vultee], business would be bad for them." The testimony before the hearing notes that Curtiss-Wright were unenthusiastic about a potential merger and this might have been why the F-87 contract was cancelled. The Secretary of the Air Force denied this, however, stating that the cancellation was the result of "operating difficulties with the experimental model of the F-87, plus increasingly satisfactory operating data on competitive all-weather fighters."

Filmed here in 1936: Prototype Fi 156 on a demo in... the streets of Berlin. The type displayed excellent STOL characteristics. Its stall speed was 31 mph! It was so good that it was replaced by helicopters!

Breaking This was a prototype of the Xiaomi 17 Air that was eventually canceled. It featured a 6.59-inch display and an ultra-thin 5.5 mm body. It actually looked quite good, but unfortunately the project was dropped. As everyone can see, the iPhone Air hasn’t been a strong seller either. Right now, every brand is taking a wait-and-see approach to the future of the “Air” category. Perhaps at the right moment, they will all resume making Air models.

The Curtiss XSB2C-1 Helldiver prototype had early issues with its Wright R-2600 Twin Cyclone engine and three-bladed propeller, structural weaknesses, poor handling, directional instability, and bad stall characteristics. In 1939, MIT wind tunnel tests on a model revealed controllability problems from its small vertical tail; Professor Otto C. Koppen reportedly said, "if they build more than one of these, they are crazy." The prototype crashed Feb 1941 (rebuilt), destroyed Dec 1941 in dive tests. The U.S. Navy required 880 modifications to the SB2C design before acceptance, delaying its combat debut until November 11, 1943.👀

The Lockheed XF-90 was a 1940s USAF long-range penetration fighter prototype that was the first USAF jet to have afterburners and first Lockheed jet to fly supersonic(in a dive). It had swept wings and an unusual adjustable vertical stabilizer that slid fore/aft . The first prototype lacked afterburners and was so underpowered it needed RATO rockets to takeoff. Influenced the F-104, but placed 2nd to the XF-88 Voodoo, partly because the design proved to be underpowered. The 2nd prototype survived 3 atomic blasts and is on display at the NMUSAF in Dayton, Ohio or what is left of it.👀 Bonus Fact (for sticking around): Starred in Blackhawk DC comics (50's-64).

U.S. Air Force F-35 fighter jet crashes during a training exercise at the Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska. The pilot experienced an “inflight malfunction” but was able to eject from the aircraft, Col. Paul Townsend, commander of the 354th Fighter Wing, told a news conference. The plane crashed during the landing phase of the flight at Eielson Air Force Base, he said. The pilot had declared an inflight emergency prior to the crash and was in stable condition and being evaluated at a medical facility, he said.

The Mirage IIIV (Balzac V) — A Mach 2 VTOL Vision That Crashed to Earth. On November 28, 1966, the Dassault Mirage IIIV-02, the only VTOL aircraft to surpass Mach 2, was lost during a transition test at Istres Air Base. Equipped with nine jet engines—a primary SNECMA TF106 turbofan for forward thrust and eight Rolls-Royce RB.162 lift jets for vertical flight—the IIIV was France’s daring answer to NATO’s NBMR-3A call for a supersonic VTOL strike fighter. During the test, flown by pilot Jean-Marie Saget, the second prototype suffered instrumentation issues and control instability while shifting from vertical to horizontal flight. Saget ejected unharmed, but the aircraft was destroyed. Deemed overly complex and with NATO’s priorities changing, the program was discontinued in 1967, ending one of aviation’s boldest vertical lift experiments.

The end of the Japanese Rocket Fighter July 7 1945 - a prototype Mitsubishi J8M1 crashes in Nagoya (Japan). Pilot Lt. Cdr. Toyohiko Inuzuka dies. J8M1 was a derivative of the German Me163 rocket fighter, on its 1st powered flight after trials as a glider. The engine failed, plane hit a building attempting an emergency landing. After this accident, none of the remaining J8M1s flew before the Japanese capitulation in August. One of only two surviving J8M´s made its way to the US and is on display at the Planes of Fame museum. Video was produced by Youtube user “Geschichte aus Metall”, it is an extract from “Sie flogen nie – Japans geheimste Kriegsflugzeuge” on Youtube, which shows this and other Japanese fighter prototypes from WW2 – go there and drop them a like and subscribe.
