The public believe in fair play: hard work and playing by the rules should matter. Migrant care workers do vital work, often in tough conditions for low pay. It’s un-British to rip up the rules & pull the rug from under them. Divisive for communities. Bad for public services.

Let me explain: First, the FTC is cracking down on "non-compete agreements," contracts that employers use to prevent their workers from changing jobs even if that job will pay a few dollars more, or provide better working conditions. Workers ought to have the right to choose who they want to work for. Second, for millions of workers who make less than $58,656, my U.S. Department of Labor is saying you have the right to overtime protections. If you work extra hours, you deserve extra pay.

The police are authorised to enforce the law. But, they do not have the right to inflict damage on property or to harass, abuse, or assault migrant workers merely based on the State they come from. When such conduct is witnessed within the Tamil Nadu State Police itself, it is hardly surprising that migrant workers across the State are increasingly subjected to physical and verbal abuse under the watch of the corrupt DMK government. It is high time we recognise and acknowledge the indispensable contribution of migrant workers to Tamil Nadu’s economy. From the construction of Metro Rail projects and National Highways to residential buildings, factories, and small production units, every pillar of our economic activity rests significantly on their labour. To deny them dignity is to undermine our own growth. These disturbing incidents are the inevitable outcome of years of hatred being systematically sown against migrant workers for narrow political gains by the DMK.

"I don't want to die as a refugee in this country" says Afraa Hashem, a Syrian woman who arrived in the UK in 2020. Afraa and her family have applied for Indefinite Leave to Remain and have been waiting for a response for ten months. We asked them about Labour's plan to reform the immigration system and how they feel about the possibility of extending the time people have to wait before they can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain from five years to 20 years.
