President Trump said on Sunday he is willing to impose sanctions on Russia, but Europe has to act in a way that is commensurate with the United States. "Europe is buying oil from Russia. I don't want them to buy oil," Trump said. "The sanctions that they're putting on are not tough enough, and I'm willing to do sanctions, but they're going to have to toughen up."

Putin was surprised that the US imposed "very tough sanctions" against Russia's largest oil companies, Lukoil and Rosneft, Lavrov said. "We agreed in Anchorage that Russia supported the United States' proposal for a comprehensive settlement of the Ukrainian crisis. After that, we expected the US to confirm that 'Now, since you agree with our proposal, let's announce something...' But suddenly, sanctions were imposed on Lukoil and Rosneft," he said in an interview with Russia Today. Also, according to Lavrov, following the US operation in Venezuela, there are "open attempts" to get Russian companies out of the country.

REP. KEATING: I have some questions about our envoy, Steve Witkoff. I mean, he met with Putin at length. He came out of that saying Putin is trustworthy. That this war criminal is a good guy. That he trusts him. Witkoff even gave advice to Ushakov, a top Putin advisor, on how to flatter our president and how to manipulate our president for the Russians. That not only provokes concern and feeling on my part that he’s not up to the job, but even colleague on Armed Services Committee on the other side of the aisle, Representative Bacon, said the guy should be removed. I must tell you, it just reinforces to me that at the end, in Ukraine there has to be some kind of military provision in place, not just words with Putin, to make sure he stops. And this is completely relevant to the Baltics, because they’re next.

APPLEBAUM: Russians aren't winning, despite the absence of United States. Maybe Trump imagined that if the U.S. disappeared, Ukraine would collapse. It didn't collapse. European part of NATO, Ukrainians, and other allies turned out to be very powerful. It's almost as if Trump is listening to Putin, getting information from Putin. He is not paying attention to what's actually happening on the ground. It's as if he has no information from Ukraine and from Europe at all.

We expect now, with these enormous sanctions, that this will maybe be the thing to unlock president Putin coming to the table and ending this war, and at least entering into a ceasefire so we can negotiate a final resolution. Rogin: The Kremlin put out a statement right after this meeting and they said, no, we'll have meetings at a high level. But they didn't say with Putin and Zelenskyy. And then they said, oh, yeah, we're totally against Nato troops in Ukraine. So the two big deliverables out of this meeting, Russia has already rejected, which kind of gets to the core of the issue, which is president trump said 50 times today that he believes Putin wants peace. And I don't know, call me skeptical. I don't think that's true. I just don't buy it. And I'm basing that on all the evidence. And that's what you see those European leaders doing. They're testing that. They're saying to president trump, if he gives you a cease fire, then maybe he's serious. And if he doesn't, then he's not serious. And that's what's really going on.

And all Russian oil companies – including Rosneft, Lukoil, Putin’s own oil company Surgutneftegas, and others – must be blocked. Their access to the world market must be cut off – this will bring Putin back to reality and greatly limit the Russian war machine’s money. And I thank President Trump for this path of pressure, and I thank the countries that are already taking these steps. And I called on all participants of our Coalition of the Willing to join these steps. Thank you to everyone who is helping!
