Milk Monday, and Kenderi isn't waiting around. Watch him hurry in the moment the bottles appear – our Voi orphan wants his milk, and he wants it now. Kenderi is one of our older orphans, well on his way through weaning. His main diet is browse now, but milk feeds offer extra sustenance (and a moment of bonding with the Keepers he still relies on) as he continues to learn how to live wild. Milk dependency in the orphaned elephants doesn't end at three, or four, or even five. Losoito is five years old at our Voi Reintegration Unit and still on bottles – up to 24 litres of specially formulated milk a day, fed every three hours, day and night. Keeper Walter has been with her for nearly every feed. Why? Well, bottles of milk serve several purposes beyond providing nutrients; they also offer comfort and time to bond with their caregivers. Despite being fortified, the formula we give can also never be considered a 100% perfect match. So we tend to find orphans remain milk dependent for longer than they might in the wild, taking advantage of the comfort bottles bring. This works to their benefit too, enabling a very gradual reintegration with plenty of time to learn the social and survival skills they need to thrive in the wild. Today marks black rhino chamboi’s two year recueversay! Just days old when rescued in 2003, Chamboi was tiny, vulnerable to predators, and didn’t yet have a hint of his species’ most defining feature - one for which rhinos have been brutally targeted over the years - a horn! In our care, he’s grown in confidence and stature. With a notable growth spurt this year, Chamboi is an impressive individual for his age. The typical stubborn rhino streak is growing in him too, but he still loves his creature comforts: bottles of milk, midday mud baths, games with his eclectic orphan friends - Bam & Boozle the ostriches, Bibi & Gruff the buffalos, Bean the warthog, and others - and a comfy bed for the night. A member of a critically endangered species, every year in Chamboi's journey is cause for celebration, representing an another step in the recovery of his kind in Kenya. 28 seconds. That's all it takes for Tytan to finish his delicious bottle of specialist formula milk. We hand feed this nine-month-old orphan black rhino milk on a schedule throughout the day. Come nightfall, he enjoys a bounty of leafy vegetation in a night time stable, which keeps his tiny tummy full overnight. Milk feeds, a dedicated Keeper presence, veterinary care and plenty of love - these are several of the key ingredients needed to raise him so that, when he's older, he can return to the wild. Shy little Arthi has a secret flair for drama. Most elephants are very business-like about food, but he makes a big production out of things. This small shrub was flipped, twirled, swirled, and even turned into a festive hat before he even considered popping it into his mouth. When it comes to milk feeds, he charges in first position, trumpeting loudly all the way! We rescued Arthi in August 2025, after our pilot spotted him alone and very distressed during a routine patrol. Six months into Nursery life, he is growing in confidence, character, and corpulence. Do the orphans know which is their bedroom? Yes, and not just their own either. Watch Mzinga, an older female, who has taken it upon herself to see new rescue Zuri settled – walking the younger calf back to her stable, then lingering at the doorway until she's lain down in her bed for the night. Task complete, Mzinga (one of the herd's self-appointed nannies) heads off to her own bedroom where two bottles of milk await her. Every orphan at our Nairobi Nursery has their own bedroom, complete with a bunk bed for a Keeper to sleep in during the small hours. Meet the baby elephants we tuck in every night:

What's the difference between raising elephants and rhinos? We went straight to the expert: Keeper Justus. He has been a parent to his own children alongside countless orphaned elephants, giraffe, and rhinos over the many years he has been with us. He says: "Rhinos need small feeds, they sleep a lot, and they are all about scent, senses and hearing – and they are content alone with their Keeper. Elephants take a long time to feed, do not sleep a lot during the day, and they are action-oriented and very social." They also, as Mwinzi shows, get jealous too! He adds: "I have my two-footed family and my four-legged family. I think it is making people back home appreciate elephants, rhinos, and other animals through the stories I tell."

Today would have been the 91st birthday of our founder, the late, great Dame Daphne Sheldrick. Although no longer with us, her legacy lives on through the orphan elephants in our care and those reintegrated back into the wild. Before Daphne, no one had successfully raised an orphaned infant African elephant. Through trial and error, successes and heartache, she developed the milk formula and husbandry needed to see these babies through infancy — laying the foundations that have seen more than 300 orphan elephants given a second chance. This evening, we joined Head Keeper Edwin as our Nursery herd came home for a warm bottle of milk and a cosy place to bed down. A ritual that’s taken place for decades — begun by Dame Daphne, and continued in her memory. — Meet the orphans in Nairobi and support them through an adoption for yourself, or a gift for someone special:

This evening stroll reminded us of a similar scene from exactly a year ago: Chamboi has grown outwards and Twiggy upwards over the past 12 months, but they still enjoy each other’s company enormously! Central to the successful rewilding of both species is gradual acceptance by the locals. Our elephant orphans hone their survival skills over years through face-to-face interactions with wild elephants, and we tend to find herds are accepting of their presence. Rhinos are different. Deeply territorial, they don't welcome newcomers. Our rhino orphans learn through scent, dung piles and the slow process of being recognised by the wild rhinos around them. Every day, dawn to dusk, their Keepers walk them along the trails and dung piles left by their wild neighbours. The calf contributes its own, and gradually – over years – it becomes an accepted part of the local community. Apollo here is mid-way through that process. Read more:

Once he’s feeling sufficiently hydrated, he meanders off into the bush for a day of exploring with his Keepers. We cannot rush the ritual, nor would we! Rescued as a newborn orphan in late 2023, Chamboi has grown a lot over the past two years – but even still, his journey with us is just beginning. When he is a bit older, we will begin the complex rewilding phase, supporting Chamboi as he establishes a territory and integrates with local rhino populations.
