Milk Monday, and Kenderi isn't waiting around. Watch him hurry in the moment the bottles appear – our Voi orphan wants his milk, and he wants it now. Kenderi is one of our older orphans, well on his way through weaning. His main diet is browse now, but milk feeds offer extra sustenance (and a moment of bonding with the Keepers he still relies on) as he continues to learn how to live wild. Milk dependency in the orphaned elephants doesn't end at three, or four, or even five. Losoito is five years old at our Voi Reintegration Unit and still on bottles – up to 24 litres of specially formulated milk a day, fed every three hours, day and night. Keeper Walter has been with her for nearly every feed. Why? Well, bottles of milk serve several purposes beyond providing nutrients; they also offer comfort and time to bond with their caregivers. Despite being fortified, the formula we give can also never be considered a 100% perfect match. So we tend to find orphans remain milk dependent for longer than they might in the wild, taking advantage of the comfort bottles bring. This works to their benefit too, enabling a very gradual reintegration with plenty of time to learn the social and survival skills they need to thrive in the wild. This small shrub was flipped, twirled, swirled, and even turned into a festive hat before he even considered popping it into his mouth. Watch Mzinga, an older female, who has taken it upon herself to see new rescue Zuri settled – walking the younger calf back to her stable, then lingering at the doorway until she's lain down in her bed for the night. Task complete, Mzinga (one of the herd's self-appointed nannies) heads off to her own bedroom where two bottles of milk await her. What's the difference between raising elephants and rhinos? We went straight to the expert: Keeper Justus. He has been a parent to his own children alongside countless orphaned elephants, giraffe, and rhinos over the many years he has been with us. He says: "Rhinos need small feeds, they sleep a lot, and they are all about scent, senses and hearing – and they are content alone with their Keeper. Elephants take a long time to feed, do not sleep a lot during the day, and they are action-oriented and very social." They also, as Mwinzi shows, get jealous too! He adds: "I have my two-footed family and my four-legged family. I think it is making people back home appreciate elephants, rhinos, and other animals through the stories I tell."

Today would have been the 91st birthday of our founder, the late, great Dame Daphne Sheldrick. Although no longer with us, her legacy lives on through the orphan elephants in our care and those reintegrated back into the wild. Before Daphne, no one had successfully raised an orphaned infant African elephant. Through trial and error, successes and heartache, she developed the milk formula and husbandry needed to see these babies through infancy — laying the foundations that have seen more than 300 orphan elephants given a second chance. Deeply territorial, they don't welcome newcomers. Our rhino orphans learn through scent, dung piles and the slow process of being recognised by the wild rhinos around them. Once he’s feeling sufficiently hydrated, he meanders off into the bush for a day of exploring with his Keepers. We cannot rush the ritual, nor would we!
