Or offering a finger to suckle. For orphaned giraffe Pips, grooming did the trick. A beautiful sunrise in Tsavo, with Mutara’s ex-orphan herd striding in from the bush. Every grown elephant you see here is an orphan we rescued, raised, and reintegrated back into the wild. In fact, many are now raising wild-born calves of their own — one of our newest additions is baby Sunni, keeping pace here despite his tiny legs! Although these elephants are now leading fully independent, wild lives, they still choose to visit us from time to time, which is an incredible privilege. Raising orphaned rhinos is a round-the-clock commitment. Through the support of our donors, we don't just care for rhinos but we become their family, their security, and their constant presence through every stage of reintegration back into the wild. Case in point: in the very early months, milk feeds take place during the day and night. (Did you spot the bunk bed? That’s where Chamboi's Keeper slept during those critical early months after his rescue). A year after this video was shot, Chamboi's daily milk needs are still met – although his night-time milk bottles have been replaced with browse. Discover what it takes to raise an orphan rhino:

Through our field conservation projects and partnerships, we protect over 2 million acres of land and viable elephant habitat. Kaikai just turned one. She's our youngest orphan elephant at our Kaluku Neonate Unit in Tsavo – and still learning a lot about her wild world. The first year of an orphan's life is the hardest. Up to 24 litres of milk a day, every three hours, day and night – round-the-clock Keeper care for years. Kaikai has another decade of that road ahead before she's ready to return to the wild. We've pioneered the rescue and reintegration of orphaned elephants – and our approach has been so successful, they've been fully accepted by wild herds, not to mention a number of wild bulls. Now we're watching family trees unfold before our very eyes – and since the door back home is always left open to any orphan that leaves our care, we get to witness playtimes like this all the time. It’s no different with our orphan herd — nanny Nyambeni is far from full-grown, but she lovingly shields tiny Kipekee to the very best of her abilities! Kipekee is the latest addition to our foster programme. Rescued in June, this tiny orphan lost her mother to human-wildlife conflict. She arrived at the Nursery in very rough shape, and it has taken round-the-clock care to nurse her back to health. It has only been two months, but she has already made enormous progress! You can adopt Kipekee and help us provide the specialised milk, veterinary treatment, and round-the-clock attention each orphan requires — working toward our ultimate goal to reintegrate every rescue back into the wild. 🐘 Adopt Kipekee:
