More and more humanoid robot kiosks are appearing in China. Yesterday, I passed by a subway entrance in Guangzhou and experienced a retail kiosk operated by a humanoid robot again, buying a bottle of water. The process was the same: select items on a screen, scan a QR code for mobile payment, and the humanoid robot retrieves the product. (However, it didn't interact with me at all.) I looked it up, and the wheeled humanoid robot is named S1, from AutoLife Robotics in Shenzhen. It uses omnidirectional wheels for movement and a lifting body. It's 1-1.6m tall, weighs 72kg, and has a 10-hour battery life. A single arm can carry 3-5kg. Furthermore, this humanoid robot is suitable for lightweight tasks in retail, convenience stores, supermarkets, and warehouse sorting.

A truly staggering number of AI-powered humanoid robots are emerging from Shenzhen, the booming Chinese tech hub. Shenzhen Dobot, which rose from a Kickstarter campaign to become an industrial automation leader, says its first humanoid robot, Atom, has entered mass production. Atom is positioned as a general-purpose cross-industry worker. Priced around $27,000, Atom boasts fine motor control that’s precise enough to pick up a cherry by the stem. Another major player is Pudu Robotics, which recently shipped its 100,000th service robot. Pudu is commercializing its wheeled and bipedal humanoids using its sizable customer base. Its flagship is the PUDU D9, a full-sized biped built to serve in places like warehouses, stores, and hotels. It sells for between $20,000 and $30,000. A newer firm, AI Squared, recently closed a funding round worth hundreds of millions of yuan to rush its Alpha Bot 2 general-purpose humanoid to market. I worked a lot on leveraging foundation models as guidance for robots in my PhD, and to me, this result forges a new frontier in how we can use foundation models for robot learning, given its broad applicability independent of embodiment and task types.
