If you're wondering whether the December 2023 stable update improved the quality of Android's USB webcam feature, it did not. Here's a video comparing the quality when using my Pixel 8 Pro as a webcam via scrcpy's camera mirroring feature versus Android's USB webcam feature.

This is the Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max, paired with an external camera. It is important to emphasize that this is a true “external camera,” not a traditional external lens or telephoto attachment. The external camera itself features an independent 1-inch sensor, with up to 10x optical zoom and 100x digital zoom. In other words, from the sensor to the lens, it is a complete and independent imaging system in its own right. It is also very simple to use. Just attach it to the camera area of the Mate 90 Pro Max, and you can control the external camera directly through the phone’s screen, operating system, and camera software. In this setup, the phone’s own camera does not participate in image capture. The camera area mainly serves to secure and connect the external camera. The actual photography is handled by the external camera’s own 1-inch sensor and 24mm-to-240mm lens. This is also the biggest difference between it and traditional smartphone telephoto attachments. Traditional telephoto attachments still rely on the phone’s original camera to capture images, whereas this solution adds a complete, independent camera system to the phone. In a sense, you can think of the Mate 90 Pro Max as the external camera’s display, operating system, and computing platform. In theory, this external camera could also be used with other phones, as long as it is securely mounted and properly adapted through the appropriate connection method.

The lack of "feature design" is why so many products over time feel hollow or messy. This isn't visual design. This isn't architectural design. I thought that a short video lecture of what feature design is and a real case study of applying it in Ghostty would be helpful. Feature design is the planning step behind how you're going to solve one or more user problems with a product feature: what that feature looks like, how it feels, and not just how its going to tactically solve these specific problems, but how that solution is going to interface with the edges of other features that currently exist or are planned to exist in the future.

The craziest thing about The iPhone 17 Pro variable aperture camera is that Apple isn't the first to do this but Samsung, which released a dual aperture smartphone back when Galaxy S9 launched. Although dual aperture is not as advanced as variable aperture, the premise is the same. A smaller aperture allows for better photos during bright light while a bigger aperture allows for better pictures in low-light. For some odd reason, Samsung decided to skip on this feature entirely after the launch of galaxy S10 and every Galaxy smartphone released after it had a fixed aperture. Chances are that Samsung will follow Apple again and re-introduce this feature with their next Galaxy smartphones but I always found it quite odd that they got rid of it on the first place.

The smartphone just declared war on the camera industry Xiaomi just dropped a wild idea: a smartphone with a detachable pro-grade camera lens. A phone that snaps on a real lens with magnets. Yes, magnets. It’s a clever move at a strange moment in history. Camera sales keep falling. Smartphones keep rising. And the real arms race isn’t glass anymore — it’s AI-powered image processing. As an AI guy and a photographer, here’s my take: Hardware won’t save the camera industry. Software will. The future of photography is no longer in the lens… it’s in the algorithm. Phones will keep getting smarter. Cameras will stay for the purists. But detachable lenses? Feels like a bridge between two worlds that are already drifting apart. But maybe I’m wrong. Maybe this hybrid future has a place. What do you think — genius innovation or a beautiful dead end? #AI #Tech #Photography #Innovation #Smartphones #FutureOfTech

iPhone 18 Pro vs 17 Pro for 3D. Big GAP 😱 Apple iPhone 18 Pro variable aperture is built for 3D spatial video. If you shoot spatial video on iPhone 17 Pro at interview distance, the main camera is fixed at F1.78 and that eye goes soft while the F2.2 Ultra Wide eye stays sharp. Your brain notices something is off. That is why some iPhone 3D feels off on Apple Vision Pro. Switch the iPhone 18 Pro to spatial video and watch the aperture blades close down. Both eyes now hold a closer depth of field and the 3D is easier to watch. Same 1080p30, same resolution. The difference is the blazes, not the sensor. And the $30,000 Blackmagic Design URSA Cine Immersive cinema camera still wins. Send this to the friend who told you the 18 Pro camera is the same as last year. #iPhone18Pro #SpatialVideo #visionpro
