Ran Fable Ultracode overnight to build out a prototype for Terrain Pro. I asked it to build out an erosion model, some procedural textures and terrain editing tools. Honestly, this looks terrible and isn't passable quality for anything except a vibe-coded game. The issue with making high quality terrain is you need a lot of high quality textures (grass, dirt, pebbles, sand) and props (trees, rocks) to go along with the underlying terrain mesh. Otherwise it's just an erosion tech demo. I'm using EZ-Tree right now to populate the trees, but EZ-Tree also isn't where it needs to be to support the vision I have in mind. I could use something like SpeedTree, but that might get pricey. If anyone knows of a good library of textures/assets with reasonable licensing terms, let me know in the comments!

All models are installed directly into your codebase instead of pre-packaged as code imports or worse yet, FBX files 🤮 Docs: This means, a simple "bunx vibe3d add Artificial Intelligence Papers-kit/pressure-gauge" will install the fully procedural code Want to change something? just tell your ai to do it It uses some shared helper code to produce the topology and at least per kit all items reuse and share the same materials, so technically performance should be better than letting your ai run wild on its own. Other machines move nearby. No two digs are the same. For a human operator, reading that environment is second nature, built from years of experience and constant sensory feedback. Teaching a machine to do the same is one of the hardest problems in autonomy. Scene understanding is how we're working to solve it. Agile Continuous Jumping in Discontinuous Terrains discuss: We focus on agile, continuous, and terrain-adaptive jumping of quadrupedal robots in discontinuous terrains such as stairs and stepping stones. Unlike single-step jumping, continuous jumping requires accurately executing highly dynamic motions over long horizons, which is challenging for existing approaches. To accomplish this task, we design a hierarchical learning and control framework, which consists of a learned heightmap predictor for robust terrain perception, a reinforcement-learning-based centroidal-level motion policy for versatile and terrain-adaptive planning, and a low-level model-based leg controller for accurate motion tracking. In addition, we minimize the sim-to-real gap by accurately modeling the hardware characteristics. Our framework enables a Unitree Go1 robot to perform agile and continuous jumps on human-sized stairs and sparse stepping stones, for the first time to the best of our knowledge. In particular, the robot can cross two stair steps in each jump and completes a 3.5m long, 2.8m high, 14-step staircase in 4.5 seconds. Moreover, the same policy outperforms baselines in various other parkour tasks, such as jumping over single horizontal or vertical discontinuities.

finally paid for a Gemini Ultra sub, and tried it out for an unsponsored unsolicited review. it has obvious flaws but... it's here! realtime playable video world model!! here's "arid desert with little tiny human towns here and there and big cliffs and lots of terrain to walk around in" where you're "a giant robot spider like in Wild Wild West". flaws: - it clips thru a lot of terrain. worse than in a game engine. - only too late do i discover you can spacebar and jump on things. - it also sometimes errors out - you can only live in the world for 60 seconds. feels like some kind of black mirror storyline - nothing else moves. ruins immersion. why does every world model lack physics? - prompt to prompt editing can have bad side effects like adding a thing removes a previous thing you liked but: - REALTIME VIDEO WORLD MODEL - instruction following was pretty good!!! - movement acommodates weird legs! - THEY NEVER EVER SHIP GENIE MODELS TO PROD. All right, who wants a robot worm? 🪱 Researchers at Case Western Reserve University developed a robot inspired by earthworms. Worms move by using wave-like muscle contractions called peristalsis. This version of the worm-inspired robot has a flexible outer mesh that can continuously change shape. Using this mesh, the robot's fixed parts can move smoothly between each other, providing power and control. This project is referred to as a "soft hyper-redundant robot," due to its highly flexible nature and ability to adapt to various environments. Created a flag on the moon based with hyper-realistic physics with v0: The flag is simulated as a grid of particles connected by springs (cloth simulation). It's influenced by gravity, wind, air resistance. The initial approach v0 one-shotted was quite simplistic, but giving it references to more sophisticated approaches in C++ and Rust quickly improved it. It was mind-blowing it to see it deeply understand the physics and port new ideas across languages. It simulated a real sun for lighting, and procedurally generated moon-like terrain with craters. I found a sick free texture on Reddit that I uploaded and it layered on top. Another epic moment was watching it improve performance. It seamlessly moved the physics simulation to a Web Worker. (Kinda cool to see given we just improved support for them in Turbopack 😉)

New open-source 3D world-generation model. I'm rendering a couple of worlds in the video, so check it out. You'll find the GitHub and the Hugging Face links to the model below. This is a multi-modal world model that you can use for a bunch of things: • To generate new worlds • To reconstruct worlds • To simulate 3D interactive worlds from a prompt, images, or a video You can edit the 3D outputs in Unity and Unreal Engine (they export as meshes, 3DGS files, and point clouds). You can also generate 3D characters in the world and walk around. Pretty fun stuff!

Testing one of the best safety features of an airplane, the “Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System” (EGPWS, pronounced E Gyp-Wiz). It’s part of every preflight check. Sound on! It’s a warning system. While the jet has separate warnings for things wrong internally, EGPWS is concerned about what’s outside the jet, not what’s inside. It’s primarily concerned w/ terrain & obstacles…EGPWS can “see” outside when pilots can’t. It doesn’t actually see anything, though. There are no cameras or lasers. EGPWS does use the jet’s radar, but not for detecting terrain. (We’ll talk more about radar in a minute, but it’s not useful for orienting yourself to terrain in the vertical. It has a “map” mode that you can use to “paint” things like cities, lakes & shorelines, but it only knows how strong the reflection is & how far away, not how high. We almost never use it in map mode, anyway) EGPWS uses the jets navigation systems – like GPS, Inertial Reference, Altimeters, airspeed, etc. – to plot a position in a virtual world. This world is contained in a database on the jet; it’s constantly plotting your position & then estimating where you’ll be in the next few minutes if the trend continues. The virtual world database knows where the mountains are. When you get close to airports in the database (not all airports are in it), it knows where the buildings & antennas are, too, out to a certain radius. Past that radius, it stops caring about the manmade objects. Anyway, it can tell if you will hit something on your current trend & will issue various warnings. It can give you up to 60 seconds of warning. It starts out slow, like saying “CAUTION, TERRAIN”, but if you don’t fix it, it gets serious…“TERRAIN, TERRAIN, PULL UP!”. You’re 20-30 seconds from impact. It’s not a miracle worker, though. It can wait to give you a warning that you can’t fix. Imagine flying toward a 10,000’ high cliff at 1,000’. A 60 second warning will not be enough time to climb 9,000’ & clear it. Or, it sees a mountain to your right, but your current path is clear. It doesn’t know you’ll do a 90° right turn once abeam the mountain. Now you’ll get some late warnings. EGPWS has various other functions. If you get on the approach but haven’t configured to land, it will say “TOO LOW, FLAPS” (or GEAR). If you start getting below the glidepath, it will say “GLIDESLOPE”. Start descending right after takeoff? “DON’T SINK”…and if you do keep sinking, it switches to “PULL UP!” Now, EGPWS doesn’t use the onboard Doppler radar for any of these functions, but it does use it to detect windshear. EGPWS doesn’t care if you turn on the radar or not, it turns it on itself when you push the throttles up for takeoff or when you descend below a certain altitude on approach. It takes about 12 seconds for the radar to build a picture from that point, but once it does, it can “see” windshear. The Doppler detects this by bouncing radar off of particulates & reading how they are moving at different altitudes. The particulates can be dust or just humidity…the radar can’t read air molecules by themselves. So, it’s still possible to get windshear the radar doesn’t see on very dry, clean days. EGPWS hates windshear. If it detects it, EGPWS replaces your screen w/ the radar – even if not turned on by you – & starts with a gentle warning to “MONITOR RADAR DISPLAY”. If you get closer to it, you get “WINDSHEAR AHEAD” (on takeoff – abort if you still can) or “GO AROUND, WINDSHEAR AHEAD!” (on landing). EGPWS is great, but can’t actually move the jet. It’s not connected to the controls in any way. Some fighters do have that capability, but not airliners. The pilots have to fix it. OK, that’s a brief summary of EGPWS. As usual, I’m dramatically simplifying things for a non-techie audience…there is much more to it & different models of jets have slight differences in how this all works. The 737 MAX has some improvements, w/ different voices & even panic, but I don’t have one to record, sorry!

If you get on the approach but haven’t configured to land, it will say “TOO LOW, FLAPS” (or GEAR). If you start getting below the glidepath, it will say “GLIDESLOPE”. Start descending right after takeoff? “DON’T SINK”…and if you do keep sinking, it switches to “PULL UP!” Now, EGPWS doesn’t use the onboard Doppler radar for any of these functions, but it does use it to detect windshear. EGPWS doesn’t care if you turn on the radar or not, it turns it on itself when you push the throttles up for takeoff or when you descend below a certain altitude on approach. It takes about 12 seconds for the radar to build a picture from that point, but once it does, it can “see” windshear. The Doppler detects this by bouncing radar off of particulates & reading how they are moving at different altitudes. The particulates can be dust or just humidity…the radar can’t read air molecules by themselves. So, it’s still possible to get windshear the radar doesn’t see on very dry, clean days. EGPWS hates windshear. If it detects it, EGPWS replaces your screen w/ the radar – even if not turned on by you – & starts with a gentle warning to “MONITOR RADAR DISPLAY”. If you get closer to it, you get “WINDSHEAR AHEAD” (on takeoff – abort if you still can) or “GO AROUND, WINDSHEAR AHEAD!” (on landing). EGPWS is great, but can’t actually move the jet. It’s not connected to the controls in any way. Some fighters do have that capability, but not airliners. The pilots have to fix it. OK, that’s a brief summary of EGPWS. As usual, I’m dramatically simplifying things for a non-techie audience…there is much more to it & different models of jets have slight differences in how this all works. The 737 MAX has some improvements, w/ different voices & even panic, but I don’t have one to record, sorry!
