On October 25, 1999, Payne Stewart’s life was tragically cut short in a private plane crash near Aberdeen, South Dakota. He was enshrined posthumously in 2001.

I remember that tournament so well. He cut the sleeves off his rain jacket and you can see him saying to Phil Mickelson that he was going to be a father. Phil was carrying a beeper and was prepared to leave the course at a moment's notice. His daughter was born the next day.

ouch the great putt Payne made, and the joy Phil had for him, yet you could see his heart break at the same time for not winning the trophy that has so alluded him

Payne Stewart had a presence that made golf feel larger than the scorecard. Remembering the character matters too.
