That’s not accountability, and that’s simply too much power for too long. That’s why I’m cosponsoring legislation to establish 18-year term limits for Supreme Court justices, with regular appointments every two years. We need to put an end to strategic retirements, court-packing games, and a system that changes the direction of the country on a single vacancy or lifetime appointment. Term limits don’t weaken the Court. They modernize it by restoring balance, strengthening accountability, and rebuilding public trust. Holder: The Supreme Court is a broken institution. And it’s something that has to be part of the national conversation in ’26 and in ’28. If there is a Democratic trifecta in 2028—and I think the possibility of that is pretty good—Supreme Court reform has to be on the table. Term limits, at a minimum, and potentially expanding the Court are things that should be seriously considered. We cannot leave in place, without at least a discussion—and I think without substantive reforms being implemented—the Supreme Court as it is presently constituted.
