Tim Curry, Ridley Scott & Tom Cruise united for what I believe is one of the most overlooked film of the ‘80s: Legend. This movie was so far ahead of its time, it hurts. Curry is unbelievable as the Lord of Darkness & the fact we are losing Curry in the middle of Ridley Scott Week only makes me think about this film more. Studio interference & multiple versions of this film got in the way of its initial release. But now? Time to start giving this film the credit it deserves.

I wrote about this yesterday but it’s worth mentioning again that I truly think The Odyssey is worthy of being mentioned with Gladiator as an all-time epic about a man separated from his family. Throughout my second viewing of The Odyssey, I couldn’t help but think of Ridley Scott. An unforgettable weekend.

Napoleon turned out to be one of the more disappointing films of the decade. I expected so much from this film - including from Joaquin Phoenix, who finally reunited with Ridley Scott after Gladiator. But this movie didn’t come anywhere near its full potential for a few reasons.

Ridley Scott’s All the Money in the World has become one of Hollywood’s most consequential films - at least in the last decade or so. I think this had the potential to be an all-time great Ridley film but, as we all know, it was totally derailed by issues related to Kevin Spacey. Ridley shot the entire film with Spacey & early reports were that Spacey delivered an Oscar-caliber performance. In other words, Spacey was the film’s heartbeat. In the wake of news breaking around horrendous allegations against Spacey, Ridley was forced to pivot with nearly no time. That led Ridley to one of my favorite actors in the history of mankind…Christopher Plummer. One door closes & another opens. Plummer, at 88, became the oldest actor ever nominated for an Oscar. All of which is to say that Plummer stepped into this film with as much grace as anyone in the situation could possibly manage - and to do it at nearly 90? Plummer must’ve thought he had seen it all, at least until this point. But while Plummer earned an Oscar nomination, this film suffered from the reshoots & recasting. It’s a tall task for any film to reshoot like this film had to but Ridley tried taking it all in stride. On the eve of a new Ridley Scott film, it’s worth revisiting one of the more interesting chapters in his career.

The Martian is Ridley Scott’s best film post-Gladiator. Some may argue it’s Black Hawk Down, but The Martian is a definitively better film because of Matt Damon’s performance, who is a brilliant muse for Scott. I still think Scott is capable of directing films of this quality.

Ridley Scott confirmed this week that an Alien: Covenant sequel is in the works. According to Scott - who is out promoting his newest film The Dog Stars - he’s still working on the third prequel film which will focus on Michael Fassbender’s android, David. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Scott noted that the third film is moving forward. Scott is 88 years old & still as busy as ever. It’s something I can’t fathom but that I appreciate immensely.

Black Mass was supposed to be the vehicle that drove Johnny Depp to Oscar’s doorstep. Released in 2015 & directed by Scott Cooper, Depp played famed Boston mobster Whitney Bulger. The film’s trailer struck a chord with audiences & this film had a lot of Oscar buzz prior to its release. But Depp’s performance, and this film overall, sort of fell flat. You guys know by now I like, but don’t love, Scott Cooper. Films like Out of the Furnace, Hostiles & Crazy Heart all really resonated with me. But Black Mass or Deliver Me From Nowhere were significant misses in my opinion. I think Cooper has potential in that he shares some of the same DNA that makes James Mangold so successful: Cooper is capable of creating meaningful, often violent, stories that still appeal to large audiences. My issue with Cooper, and Black Mass, is it’s a bit inconsistent. There are moments that reach real heights, but not for sustained periods. I’m willing to revisit Black Mass as the film passes its 10 year anniversary, but I’m not sure Johnny Depp has even tried to win an Oscar in the years since this film’s release.

I love Ridley & while I don’t always enjoy all of his films, he’s fearless & has undeniable courage. A reminder that his 1984 commercial for Apple helped springboard Ridley’s career to new heights. Scott was an established commercial director before turning into a feature filmmaker.

Gladiator was Ridley Scott’s best chance at an Oscar in 2001. He lost the award to Steven Soderbergh for Traffic, a decision I can’t necessarily argue with? Traffic is exceptional. But so is Gladiator. Crowe won Best Actor & this film won Best Picture. Ridley just came up short.

Ridley Scott is a legend. There’s no other way to put it. You guys know this is Ridley Scott Week but in this week alone, we’ve lost Tim Curry & Dolly Parton, each of whom were 80. With that context, how can you not take a moment to appreciate that at age 88, Ridley Scott is still making films? Not to mention he’s not cutting corners/using AI. The man will be 90 in a matter of months but he’s still fighting for Cinema. Appreciate legends while you can. At least that’s what I’m doing.

The Color of Money finally won Paul Newman an Oscar and while many people criticize the win as a lifetime achievement award, I genuinely think Newman deserved the award. He’s commanding & charismatic as Hell in this film & he passes the torch to Tom Cruise. This was a performance worthy of an Academy Award.

Ridley Scott is an icon. Legend. Visionary. The same man who directed the world-famous 1984 commercial for Apple during the Super Bowl just delivered another damn good film with The Dog Stars. My review of the film is pinned to my profile & I gave Ridley 4 stars. Never mind the fact this man is nearly 90, regardless of his age, Scott still has just fastball.
