Rob Reiner auditioned many big names for Misery (1990) before casting Kathy Bates, then a relatively unknown theater actress. Stephen King called her performance “perfect,” & she became the first woman to win an Oscar for Best Actress in a King adaptation.

Part of Rob Reiner’s legacy is working alongside Kathy Bates as Bates delivered an #Oscar-winning performance in Misery. This is one of my favorite Academy Award wins since the ‘70s. Bates’ evil is so believable & Reiner brought the best out of her. I’ll always return to this.

On Misery (1990), Rob Reiner used real tension to shape the performances. When Kathy Bates told him James Caan wasn’t engaging with her due to his no-rehearsal approach, Reiner advised her to turn that frustration into her character. He also kept Caan bedridden for 15 weeks — a tough, reaction-heavy role Caan wasn’t used to. RIP Rob Reiner. 🕊️

After Stephen King watched Stand by Me for the first time, director Rob Reiner noticed he was visibly shaken; King quietly asked for a moment to think, stepped out of the room, and when he returned he said, “This is the best adaptation of anything I’ve ever written.”
