The exiled NUP President Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has paid tribute to one of Uganda’s most celebrated playwright, Alex Mukulu, who passed away at the age of 72. Bobi Wine described Mukulu as a rare voice who refused to surrender his conscience, even at a time when, in his view, the Museveni government was using patronage and other incentives to win the loyalty of artists and silence critical voices. As Uganda moves toward the 2026 general elections, the nation is once again being dragged into a familiar and troubling cycle of state-sponsored violence. Security forces loyal to President Yoweri Museveni are once more unleashing repression, shielded by a regime determined to cling to power at all costs. The scenes unfolding today are eerily reminiscent of the run-up to the 2021 elections, when opposition leader Bobi Wine was arrested and brutalized, scores of his supporters were killed, and the electoral process was widely condemned as fraudulent. History is now repeating itself. Police and military forces are openly trampling on the law and the Constitution, not in the interest of national security, but to preserve Museveni’s iron grip on power. As this repression intensifies, Museveni continues to posture as the guardian of Uganda’s so-called “gains,” a slogan he now routinely deploy to justify state violence. In reality, this rhetoric serves as a calculated attempt to gaslight the nation, masking repression as patriotism. During the lead-up and after the previous election, however, these kind of narrative were put under rare and intense scrutiny. In a now-notable interview with Channel 4 News journalist Lindsey Hilsum, Museveni was confronted with his own words. He made explosive yet unsubstantiated claims that Bobi Wine was funded by the LGBTQ+ community and foreign agents. Hilsum refused to let these accusations slide, repeatedly demanding evidence. Unable to substantiate his claims, Museveni resorted to deflection, laying bare the hollowness of his accusations and the desperation behind them. Today, I represented H.E. President Yoweri K Museveni at the burial of Mzee Isanga Edward in Ngoma, Nakaseke District. The President described Mzee Isanga as his longtime friend and a patriot who made significant contributions to the NRA liberation struggle and to the socioeconomic transformation of his community by supporting the establishment of a primary school and a seed secondary school. He said that Mzee Isanga’s death has deprived the country of a wealth creator who was an outstanding livestock farmer.
