The robot is used to inspect the walls of ships. 🚢 The Magnet Crawler introduced by the University of Bremen is a lightweight and compact climbing robot for magnetic surfaces. The robot has two magnetic wheels driven by geared motors and an elastic tail to improve stability. In the front part of the robot, there is a miniature wireless camera. The robot is remotely teleoperated & the video signal from the camera is displayed to the operator on a portable screen. Let's wait and perhaps the robot will become more autonomous over time. Modular robots that repair themselves by... stealing parts! 👀 A team at Columbia University built robots made of Truss Links, stick-shaped modules with magnetic connectors at each end. Connect a few and you get a structure that can expand, contract, roll, and reshape itself. If a link breaks or comes loose, the robot grabs a spare module nearby and rebuilds itself. The vlog from Pollen Robotics is out! A fantastic visit in Bordeaux to see myself one of the only European humanoids companies. I visited their HQ and saw how they build and test robots. Gravity-defying robot! 🦎 VertiGo is a wall-climbing robot created by Disney Research and ETH Zürich that can transition between ground and wall. The robot can move on a wall quickly and with agility. VertiGo has four wheels, two tiltable propellers, and two tiltable propellers. One pair of wheels is steerable, and each propeller has two degrees of freedom for adjusting the direction of thrust. The choice of two propellers rather than one enables a floor-to-wall transition, thrust is applied both towards the wall using the rear propeller and in an upward direction using the front propeller, resulting in a flip onto the wall. They mimic the flexible movements of octopus arms and elephant trunks to grasp objects. 🐘 SpiRobs use simple cables to move, making them easy to control and operate. A 40-year-old patent has finally been brought to life. That's the Y-zipper. A 3D-printed three-sided fastener that transitions any object from flexible to rigid and back again. The robotics application is the one that caught my attention. A quadruped robot that adjusts its leg stiffness depending on terrain, switching between rigid and flexible in real time without additional motors or complex mechanical systems. What I'm really impressed of is the high precision positioning of pallets directly next to the truck or container wall. Brain-controlled exoskeletons to train humanoid robots! 🧠 Fourier just presented human tele-operators using brain control interfaces and exoskeletal arms to train humanoid robots on home tasks. The brain control interface is the interesting part. Instead of using a controller or joystick to teleoperate, the operator's movements and intentions are captured more naturally through the exoskeleton and BCI. This means the demonstrations are more fluid, more human-like, and better suited for training robots to perform delicate home tasks. Multiple tele-operators are simultaneously generating training data across multiple robots. This is how you build the dataset needed for eventual full autonomy, without waiting years for it to arrive. This might be the bridge between "robots that work in controlled environments" and "robots that work in homes." Robots that carry up to 56 tons! 🏋🏼 The railcar production process is highly complex, particularly when moving massive cars sideways within a plant. This challenge has been addressed at the Siemens facility in Germany using the OmniMove system from KUKA. The system allows for precise positioning, enabling the units to lift, move, and lower railcars with remarkable accuracy. With Mecanum wheels, the OmniMove units can move seamlessly in any direction, making the process incredibly efficient. Together, these units are capable of lifting up to 56 tons, streamlining heavy railcar production. This one is clearly tele-operated, but just looking at it makes me feel safer when I see a human in the loop. Robotics is entering the mainstream! 👀 Let's accept this fact. Consumptionism – stonks. Possibilities (HW + SW) – stonks. Demographics - not stonks. Modern robots are often designed to interact with our legacy world, whether it's a household, a factory, or a shipyard. That means they often need to work with existing machines, tools, and spaces. In short: retrofitting. Improving old machines with new technologies without major interference in their operation. Modern way of integrating things. You don't have to change the entire environment to deploy a robot. The robot will adapt, just as human would when freshly hired. The promise is to have an army of robots to help with the world designed for us. I also believe that general purpose robots, are not a direct competition for single purpose machines (like a highly efficient specialized packaging machine, for example).
