The robot is used to inspect the walls of ships. 🚢 The Magnet Crawler introduced by the University of Bremen is a lightweight and compact climbing robot for magnetic surfaces. The robot has two magnetic wheels driven by geared motors and an elastic tail to improve stability. In the front part of the robot, there is a miniature wireless camera. The robot is remotely teleoperated & the video signal from the camera is displayed to the operator on a portable screen. Let's wait and perhaps the robot will become more autonomous over time. The vlog from Pollen Robotics is out! A fantastic visit in Bordeaux to see myself one of the only European humanoids companies. I visited their HQ and saw how they build and test robots. Gravity-defying robot! 🦎 VertiGo is a wall-climbing robot created by Disney Research and ETH Zürich that can transition between ground and wall. The robot can move on a wall quickly and with agility. VertiGo has four wheels, two tiltable propellers, and two tiltable propellers. One pair of wheels is steerable, and each propeller has two degrees of freedom for adjusting the direction of thrust. The choice of two propellers rather than one enables a floor-to-wall transition, thrust is applied both towards the wall using the rear propeller and in an upward direction using the front propeller, resulting in a flip onto the wall. Robots with tentacles! 🐙 SpiRobs are soft robots inspired by nature, designed in the shape of a logarithmic spiral. They mimic the flexible movements of octopus arms and elephant trunks to grasp objects. 🐘 SpiRobs use simple cables to move, making them easy to control and operate. They can scale from small to large sizes, ranging from centimeters to meters. The robots can adapt to different object shapes, improving their grasping ability. A mini version can act as a tiny gripper, while a large version can be mounted on drones. Interestingly, multiple robots can work together to wrap around and hold large objects. A 40-year-old patent has finally been brought to life. That's the Y-zipper. A 3D-printed three-sided fastener that transitions any object from flexible to rigid and back again. The robotics application is the one that caught my attention. A quadruped robot that adjusts its leg stiffness depending on terrain, switching between rigid and flexible in real time without additional motors or complex mechanical systems. But this goes way beyond robotics. A wrist cast that loosens during the day and stiffens at night. A tent that pops into shape in 90 seconds instead of six minutes. This robot is playing Tetris! 🧊 AGILOX dropped something exciting at LogiMAT. One of the most requested robot use cases finally automated: Manual truck loading. What I'm really impressed of is the high precision positioning of pallets directly next to the truck or container wall. There are no robots at all. Instead of robots, over 300 linear actuators precisely control the ball’s movement on the field, demonstrating incredible accuracy. The setup even includes an advanced kicking mechanism, similar to a SCARA robot, that uses two linear actuators and one rotary actuator to kick the ball into the net. 🥅 This fixed automation shows how powerful and precise automation can be without needing mobile robots on the field. The brain control interface is the interesting part. Instead of using a controller or joystick to teleoperate, the operator's movements and intentions are captured more naturally through the exoskeleton and BCI. This means the demonstrations are more fluid, more human-like, and better suited for training robots to perform delicate home tasks. Multiple tele-operators are simultaneously generating training data across multiple robots. This is how you build the dataset needed for eventual full autonomy, without waiting years for it to arrive. This might be the bridge between "robots that work in controlled environments" and "robots that work in homes." Robots that carry up to 56 tons! 🏋🏼 The railcar production process is highly complex, particularly when moving massive cars sideways within a plant. This challenge has been addressed at the Siemens facility in Germany using the OmniMove system from KUKA. The system allows for precise positioning, enabling the units to lift, move, and lower railcars with remarkable accuracy. With Mecanum wheels, the OmniMove units can move seamlessly in any direction, making the process incredibly efficient. Together, these units are capable of lifting up to 56 tons, streamlining heavy railcar production. This one is clearly tele-operated, but just looking at it makes me feel safer when I see a human in the loop. Robotics is entering the mainstream! 👀 Let's accept this fact. Consumptionism – stonks. Possibilities (HW + SW) – stonks. Demographics - not stonks. Modern robots are often designed to interact with our legacy world, whether it's a household, a factory, or a shipyard. That means they often need to work with existing machines, tools, and spaces. In short: retrofitting. Improving old machines with new technologies without major interference in their operation. Modern way of integrating things. You don't have to change the entire environment to deploy a robot. The robot will adapt, just as human would when freshly hired. The promise is to have an army of robots to help with the world designed for us. I also believe that general purpose robots, are not a direct competition for single purpose machines (like a highly efficient specialized packaging machine, for example). You have to model the geometry, add textures, set lighting, generate collision meshes… all before a robot can even interact with it. Marble by World Labs removes most of that work. You type a text prompt or give it an image, and it generates a full 3D scene with depth, lighting, and a collider mesh you can export into engines like MuJoCo. That means researchers can quickly create lots of different environments to train robots on, which is exactly what domain randomization needs.
