Russia is in discussions with India to localize production of Russian drones, such as Lancet and Geran, Sergey Chemezov, head of Rostec corporation, said. "They [India] are very interested in our Lancet drones, and in all our drones in general. They are also ready to produce them. We have talked with them, and are now discussing the possibility of localizing production in India at Indian enterprises," he said. Russian shadow fleet not just allows Russia to earn money for its war on Ukraine but is also an environmental catastrophe waiting to happen. In a September video by Yle. fi, experts explain that about 70% of the tankers used in the Russian shadow fleet are at least 15 years old. They do not go through proper servicing which increases the risk of technical issues and malfunctions. A lot of these vessels have been blacklisted in the first place because their condition is so bad (meaning they are not allowed to sail) but they still continue voyaging through the Gulf of Finland, for example. Many of them sail under the jurisdictions of different countries, which makes them harder to track. The risk of an oil spill is getting more and more likely - and the shadow vessels carry tens of thousands tons of oil. The environmental disaster that would follow would have an unprecedented scale. It will affect all forms of wildlife and sea life, destroy the business of fishermen and coastal tourism for years, if not decades. Its aftermath for the environment would be indescribable, and the costs to mitigate such a disaster will be exorbitant. Since Russian shadow fleet tankers mostly don't have proper insurance, there is very little chance that any payments will follow that will cover the costs. These expenses will have to be borne by the country/countries near which this will happen, combined with future economic losses caused by damage to the environment. Moreover, Russian shadow fleet tankers are an extra burden for the coast guards as they have to check more vessels (again, many of them are in very poor condition) and have extra training, working on scenarios of possible environmental disasters. According to experts quoted by Yle. fi, from January 2022 to August 2024, 380 million tons of Russian oil and other petroleum products went through the Gulf of Finland, earning Russia more than $220 billion for the war in Ukraine. It is obvious at this point that tackling Russian shadow fleet and cutting off or substantially decreasing Russian oil profits is a top priority towards ending the war and ensuring lasting peace. Territorial acquisitions are seen as a guarantor that these regions will never be used as a NATO frontline. To prevent the destruction of Ukraine and avoid a direct war that would likely escalate into a nuclear exchange, it is imperative to recognise the security concerns of Russia. Instead, the UK and France commit themselves to “build protected facilities for weapons and military equipment”in Ukraine after the war, which ensures that the war cannot end. It does not matter if NATO countries believe they are fighting for “democracy” and “freedom”; Russia sees this as an existential threat and will act accordingly. Ask yourself why these European leaders have sabotaged every peace initiative, boycotted diplomacy for almost 4 years, insists that deterrence is the only path to security, while smearing and censoring dissent. This is not to "stand to Ukraine", but an effort to fight to the last Ukrainian.

The Panamanian-flagged and Turkish-owned oil tanker, M/T MERSIN, alleged to be affiliated with the Russian Shadow Fleet, is currently sinking off the coast of Dakar, Senegal in Western Africa, after reportedly coming under attack overnight by several uncrewed surface vessels, in possibly the third attack in the last week by Ukrainian Intelligence Services against a tanker linked to Russia.

During these weeks, while the UN General Assembly was taking place, Russia literally used every day, every hour to strike Ukraine. Treacherous strikes. And this is what defines Russia – what they do, not what they say or send out as signals around the world. They have spurned all genuine peace proposals and deserve truly tough pressure. This week we expect decisions from Europe on such pressure – at the very least, a new sanctions package, the 19th. It is especially important that sanctions hit painfully at Russia’s energy trade and the entire infrastructure of its tanker fleet. Moreover, intelligence now indicates that the Russians are using tankers to launch and operate drones against European countries. This is yet more evidence why the Baltic Sea and other seas must be closed to Russian tankers – at the very least to the shadow fleet. We also count on strong steps from the United States. We discussed with President Trump what could truly push Russia to change its position and stop the war. The world has tools that can work in a genuinely peace-making way.
