🎥 Ryan Grim asks Jeremy Scahill how Iran can engage with the U.S. while Washington openly pursues a strategy centered on assassinating Iranian political figures, noting the global outrage if a U.S. envoy were targeted or threatened the same way. 🎥 “Iran warned for weeks that Lebanon was a red line.” Jeremy Scahill opened Drop Site’s livestream with a rundown of the latest developments in U.S.-Iran negotiations, Israel’s escalating attacks on Lebanon, and Iran’s retaliatory missile strikes on Israel. Ryan Grim added that Trump is facing growing pressure beyond the battlefield. Major financial institutions had bet the Strait of Hormuz crisis would be resolved by June, while Trump is also heading into the World Cup and the kickoff of his planned America 250 celebrations. “If their analysis falls apart,” Grim said of market expectations, “part of the structure of this kind of fantastic market that we’ve had starts to crumble.” jeremy scahill | Ryan Grim

🎥 Jeremy Scahill Breaks Down the Current State of the War and Negotiations President Trump is trying to spin the emerging U.S.–Iran memorandum of understanding as a victory, but the core U.S. demands have fallen away, Jeremy Scahill said. “The 2015 JCPOA already said Iran would not seek, develop, or acquire nuclear weapons,” Scahill said. “The Strait of Hormuz was open before the war began.” Iran’s key demands now are lifting the U.S. military blockade on Hormuz, withdrawing U.S. forces amassed in the region, repatriating billions in frozen assets, and importantly, securing an end to Israel’s war on Lebanon, he explains. jeremy scahill | Ryan Grim

Ryan Grim and Emily Jashinsky spoke with Drop Site’s Jeremy Scahill about the fragile U.S.–Iran ceasefire and Tehran’s 10-point plan. Scahill explains Donald Trump was “desperate for an off-ramp,” after Tehran used the Strait of Hormuz to show it could cause “absolute global economic havoc.” He said Iran is treating the deal as a pause, with its “finger firmly on the trigger.” The pause now could be cover to “rearm Israel” before new strikes, especially as attacks in Lebanon continue. Both sides claim victory, but the truce is unstable and could unravel quickly, Scahill told Breaking Points. jeremy scahill | Ryan Grim | Emily Jashinsky

🎥 Jeremy Scahill on the opening of the Iran-U.S. 60-day talks Scahill says the first day of negotiations in Switzerland unfolded against fierce debate inside Iran over whether officials should meet with the Trump administration after the war. Israel attempted to undermine the talks by escalating its assault on Lebanon, while Iran used the Strait of Hormuz as leverage before its delegation arrived. Scahill discusses Tehran’s brief walkout, describing it not as a collapse of negotiations but a calculated signal that it still holds leverage. jeremy scahill | Krystal Ball | Saagar Enjeti

🎥 Ryan Grim and Jeremy Scahill discuss how Trump’s mounting domestic crises intersect with the U.S. escalation toward Iran — and how Tehran is signaling that any attack could trigger a wider regional war. They note Trump’s recent domestic troubles, from the ICE killing in Minnesota to renewed fallout from the Epstein files, and Grim says people close to Trump see foreign confrontation as a political release valve. Citing a new Amwaj Media report based on information from Tehran insiders, Grim outlines a shift in Iranian strategy. For years, Iran has pursued calibrated, pre-announced retaliation to de-escalate tensions. Iranian officials now believe that approach backfired, inviting more U.S. and Israeli strikes by signaling restraint. The new thinking, Grim and Scahill note, is to signal that any attack would lead to an Iranian response that would spiral into a wider, prolonged, regional conflict — not the short, choreographed strikes Trump prefers and can claim to both launch and end. University of Tehran professor Foad Izadi previously told Drop Site that Tehran views the killing of 500 U.S. troops as a threshold retaliatory response to any U.S. attack. 🎥 Jeremy Scahill told Breaking Points that Israeli anger over the reported U.S.-Iran agreement is not confined to Netanyahu’s far-right allies, but reflects a broader consensus inside Israel’s political class to continue the war in Lebanon. Scahill said Iranian officials and analysts believe another war with Israel is likely, and that Lebanon remains the key test of whether the emerging US-Iran deal holds. “The massive question looming over this,” Scahill said, is whether Iran will refuse nuclear negotiations unless Israel’s “scorched-earth bombing or siege of Lebanon stops.” jeremy scahill | Krystal Ball | Saagar Enjeti

🎥 “You always hit a point where they carve out their own version of a Palestine exception.” Rep. Ro Khanna described himself as a “student of Lincoln,” and Ryan Grim suggested Khanna sees Jeremy Scahill as the “crazy abolitionist” willing to say publicly what Khanna may believe but considers politically impossible. Scahill credited Khanna for engaging seriously and for taking positions on Palestine that remain highly unusual in Congress, while explaining why journalists still have a responsibility to press elected officials on the limits of their support for Palestinians. 🎥 No U.S. deaths reported in kidnapping of Venezuelan President Maduro Jeremy Scahill questions investigative journalist and former U.S. Army Ranger Jack Murphy on how a U.S. raid that killed Maduro’s security forces and kidnapped the leader from his home left no American troops dead or seriously injured. “How does that happen?” Scahill asks, noting the operation targeted the presidential guard of a state in a revolutionary stance facing regime change—forces presumed to be among the country’s most elite. Murphy points to overwhelming preparation, cyber disruption, and luck. jeremy scahill | Ryan Grim | Jack Murphy

🎥 Jeremy Scahill and Ryan Grim on AOC’s Gaza Reckoning Ryan Grim says AOC has a credible “free shot” at the 2028 nomination, but her claim that Kamala Harris was “working tirelessly” for a ceasefire will follow her until she addresses it. Jeremy Scahill says Gaza became a defining moral issue for young voters, yet AOC played “sheepdog” for VP Harris while Biden funded and enabled the genocide, then Democrats blamed voters of conscience for refusing to fall in line. “There’s no question that she was not the voice of the opposition,” Grim said. Had she taken that role, she could enter 2028 with immense moral authority and be “almost unbeatable.” jeremy scahill | Ryan Grim

🎥 “It’s like you might as well be sitting with a fourth grader.” — Jeremy Scahill relaying how Iranian officials described U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff during ongoing negotiations with Iran. Speaking on Majority Report, Scahill said the talks reflected a broader pattern of U.S. policy in the region being shaped by Israeli intelligence and around Israeli objectives. Iran came to the table with nuclear PhDs and experts fluent in every clause of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. The U.S. “sent Trump’s golf buddy and his son-in-law.” Scahill said Jared Kushner was “not…operating on behalf of U.S. national security” at all — but those of Israel, the Gulf states, and the “Trump crime family” business. He cited Kushner’s significant financial backing from Gulf sovereign wealth funds and reported ongoing coordination with PM Benjamin Netanyahu throughout the talks. Contrasting that with Iran’s delegation of nuclear specialists and policy experts, Scahill said Iranian officials ultimately concluded the February negotiations were not serious, but a prelude to war. jeremy scahill | Emma Vigeland

💢 Jeremy Scahill says Iraq is once again “up for grabs” on the regional chessboard, as the country the U.S. invaded, occupied, and dismantled is pulled back into a widening war that will have “huge implications for the future of Iraq.” He describes a deeper clash underway, where societies with deep historical roots and the capacity to endure are confronting Washington’s approach. As he puts it, “the long view of history is clashing up against the short-term attention span of Donald Trump and his concoction of neocon plus MAGA foreign policy.” Watch the full discussion from our livestream this morning below, where Scahill and Ryan Grim break down how U.S. policy, regional escalation, and internal Iraqi power struggles are converging. jeremy scahill | Ryan Grim

🎥 WATCH | Jeremy Scahill reports that Trump’s indefinite “ceasefire extension” is being repackaged by the White House as a response to supposed chaos in Tehran, after Iran held firm on refusing talks unless the U.S. lifted its blockade on Iranian ports. Scahill says Iranian officials told him the decision was made at the highest levels of power and that White House claims of internal disarray, house arrests, or an IRGC takeover of diplomacy are “psychological warfare” — an attempt to let Trump save face after, in Iran’s view, “he blinked first.” 🔗 Full details in Jeremy Scahill’s new report for Drop Site linked below. jeremy scahill | Ryan Grim | Emily Jashinsky

⭕️ Ryan Grim on Democrats’ cynical political calculations Grim argues that many Democrats quietly support US strikes on Iran and even regime change, but understand a broader war is deeply unpopular. He says that helps explain why party leaders did not advance a War Powers vote before the attack, allowing it to stall until after the strike. Publicly, Democrats demand explanations and warn Trump is acting “recklessly.” Privately, Grim suggests, they see a political win-win: if the war goes badly or leads to U.S. casualties, Trump pays the price. jeremy scahill | Ryan Grim
