Tomorrow I will vote no on Bill C-9. The Liberals' decision to shut down debate on this deeply concerning Bill and rush its passage through the House is wrong. I submitted to the House a petition from local faith leaders that warned of the dangers of ignoring the concerns of Canada's many faith communities regarding Bill C-9. Civil liberty groups and major unions echoed these concerns. C-9 will only chill freedom of speech and weaken our ability to combat hate. It should not be passed.

Not a single witness was called to testify on the Liberal decision to strip the religious defence out of the criminal code through Bill C-9. I tabled a petition from Canadians concerned about Bill C-9. Hate speech is already illegal under sections 318 and 319 of the Criminal Code. Petitioners are not asking for less protection. They are asking Parliament not to remove long-standing safeguards that protect sincerely held beliefs expressed in good faith. Bill C-9 risks expanding government power while weakening important Charter protections. When Canadians take the time to defend their fundamental freedoms, Parliament has a duty to listen.

When hate speech cases were already being addressed under existing laws, the need for a separate Hate Speech Bill raises serious questions. The Indian Constitution and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita already provide safeguards while guaranteeing the Right to Freedom of Speech and Expression under Article 19(1)(a). The concern is not about protecting hatred, but about intent — is this law meant to protect a specific community, or to silence Hindutva voices? In a democracy, laws must restrain hate, not ideology or belief !
