Religious freedom is not a privilege granted by government, it is a fundamental right provided by the Charter. Bill C-9 expands the definition of hate while removing long-standing religious protection, raising concerns that certain passages from sacred texts could be criminalized. My constituents and tens of thousands of Canadians have been clear: sincerely held faith beliefs must be protected and Bill C-9 must be withdrawn.

Canadians should never fear persecution for sincerely held beliefs. This is why I have fought Bill C-9 from the beginning. While the Liberals claim it provides protection, people of faith across Canada are reaching out by the thousands with deep concern about how this bill will impact their ability to practice their faith freely. The government is elected by the people, and it's time that they listen to the people who will be impacted by this legislation, instead they have taken every action to limit debate. As we approach the stage of the final vote, I will not support Bill C-9, because freedom is foundational to our democracy.

Sadly, Bill C-9 has passed. The only amendment was to add the noose as a hate symbol. Nothing was added to protect freedom of religion or good-faith religious expression. Bill C-9 is not a serious effort to combat hate. It is a tool to enforce Liberal DEI ideology while leaving fundamental freedoms dangerously exposed.

Sadly, Bill C-9 has passed. The only amendment was to add the noose as a hate symbol. Nothing was added to protect freedom of religion or good-faith religious expression. Here is a question for all of you: Do you believe we should be making it easier for our government to prosecute and jail Canadians based not on their actions – but on their words? To criminalize speech and prosecute those for expressing sincerely held religious beliefs? For me, the answer will always be no. Free speech, free expression and freedom of religion are foundational principles upon which our nation, and Western civilization, is built. I will always defend these fundamental Charter rights. My full speech opposing the Liberal censorship bill, C-9.

Let’s be clear: Bill C-9, The Combatting Hate Act, is the anti-hate legislation that communities and law enforcement across Canada are asking for. Our government remains willing to work across the aisle to look for constructive improvements to this Bill. What we will not accept are endless delays and Conservative tactics designed to dodge a vote on this bill. I made a promise to my constituents to stand up for them and pass laws to fight back against hate immediately. Canadians want action- it’s time for Conservative members to get on board.

Today, the Liberals, with the help of the Bloc, are moving to end debate on this proposal and silence the many voices of concerned Canadians.

The petitioners are calling for greater safeguards for privacy, personal freedom, and individual autonomy. They are concerned about the collection and linking of sensitive personal information, the risk of data breaches and identity theft, and the potential for government overreach. As technology continues to evolve, Canadians deserve transparency, accountability, and the assurance that their privacy and fundamental freedoms will be protected. Thank you to everyone who took the time to make their voices heard.

Canadians should not be threated with unprecedented police powers to suppress speech online. But for every societal problem, the Liberals' first instinct is to erode the freedoms of Canadians. Thank you to the many residents of York-Durham who have written to me about this. I will keep fighting against the kinds of attacks on personal freedom the government has introduced in Bills C-2, C-8, and C-9.

I submitted to the House a petition from local faith leaders that warned of the dangers of ignoring the concerns of Canada's many faith communities regarding Bill C-9. Civil liberty groups and major unions echoed these concerns. C-9 will only chill freedom of speech and weaken our ability to combat hate. It should not be passed.

For the record, here is his full statement. While we appreciate that Minister Fraser thinks that the amendment to strip the good-faith religious text exemption will have no real implication on religious and individual freedom, we respectfully disagree. Among other factors, there would be no reason to strip the exemption at all in the first place if doing so had zero effect of the Criminal Code. We need more consultation on Bill C-9. All Canadians and concerned communities must be heard. We must protect freedom and free expression.
