Originally the ridges were put there to keep the container from forming a vacuum seal with a smooth surface. Check your spice jars!! I also only learned about this recently and wonder what the ‘real’ reason for the ridges was.

V!rg!n Atlantic had a problem with passengers constantly swiping their salt and pepper shakers. Instead of getting rid of them, they added the phrase "pinched from Virgin Atlantic" to the bottom. The shakers turned into fun conversation starters at dinner tables and ended up being free advertising for the airline.
