San Antonio's first "diverging diamond" interchange — an innovative lane configuration designed to reduce traffic congestion and accidents — has opened at Blanco Road and Loop 1604 on the far North Side.

And...it's terrible. You can't continue on the frontage road, the lines at the light are awful, and no one knows how to use it. I almost got hit on three separate occasions and watched a car turn the wrong way into oncoming traffic.

It’s confusing AF and you can’t go straight across blanco on the access road anymore so I literally can’t get to @pterrys

TXDot needs to get their heads examined. They have some stupid people working for them and worse front office hiring those people.

Honestly, it still needs some work. I drove there this week, after they put down markings, but the signs above are still inaccurate regarding which lane goes where (to 1604, Blanco, or both).

We have these where I live. It’s ok in new construction, but when they try and shoehorn them into existing infrastructure, you end up with a lot of closed businesses that people can’t get to easily.

Since it’s been open, I’ve almost been hit four times by confused drivers.

All we had to do was run the dang ball, but we chose a fancy diamond formation and fumbled.

Where’s the science on this reducing accidents? There is zero chance this reduces accidents.

I fucking hate this intersection. Glad they finally finished it but having to use it damn near every day doesn’t raise my opinion of it.

Damn we can't even do roundabouts here. Good luck y'all.

You lose easy access to to the feeder street beyond the intersection. You will need to turn right go thru the diamonds, turn around, go thru the diamond again an then continue down the feeder. The ultimate goal is to make freeways like California or the east coast. The feeder street is eliminated and the areas on each side of the freeway become slums.

I’m not a fan. Going east bound 1604 you can’t continue along the frontage road from Huebner to stone oak.

Anything but proper public transportation

It's horrible, if you are on the 1604 access road, you are unable to cross Blanco road in either west or east bound. So if you are on 1604 west bound and want to get to LA fitness, you have to turn right on blanco, get into the Target shopping center to get there.

Oh yeah! They did this in Los Angeles too! Fairfax, Olympic and San Vicente all converge into one intersection. Traffic got worse.

Or, here's a revolutionary idea, we could simply build overlapping roads as layered bridges

This is great for those people who always run red lights. Now, instead of t-boning, your collision will be more head on! Great work, TXDOT

They did a similar monstrosity in Austin at Parmer/IH35. Gives me anxiety every time.

One of first few built is in College Station TX, sorry we don’t like it, saw many accidents, not everyone is used to this new arrangement. Locals get used to it but outsiders become crazy and have seen most of the time people drove wrong way. You can’t control it. Let’s revert

Similar design at I35 and 1431. The line to get to the I35 North entrance is crazy. Lots of congestion caused by drivers trying to cut in after they realize the missed the end of the line.

Something new. All of the slow special people will need like 1yr to adapt and like 6hrs of training on how to read signs and define striping

These have been a consistent failure every single place it’s been implemented. Literally their own data says it moves less traffic. Impressive

I knew my teacher didn't know what she was talking about when she said the shortest distance between two points was a straight line. 🤦🏽
