The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Chairman Wontumi, has arrived at the Accra High Court as the court is expected to deliver its final judgment on allegations of his involvement in illegal mining activities within forest reserves. However, his legal team has filed an application seeking a suspension of the judgment, arguing that a constitutional interpretation case related to the matter is currently pending before the Supreme Court. His lead counsel, Lawyer Samuel Atta Akyea, who is currently out of the country, has also informed the court that he is expected to return on June 22. Charles Kanjama: It is a groundbreaking ruling because it is breaking new ground. It is a ruling that, in my view, takes the country a bit backwards on issues of public participation. Personally, I am a bit disappointed on that issue, and I feel that on some of the other aspects that were dealt with by the court, there was a tendency to disregard part of the evidence that was there to challenge. I feel that this groundbreaking judgment of the court had a number of missteps that need to be addressed when the matter goes to the court of appeal #CitizenMondayReport

Two weeks later, after consultations with elders in Wamunyoro, he filed a Notice of Appeal at the Court of Appeal stating that he actually agrees with the KSh 50 million damages awarded to him. In fact, in the entire High Court judgment, the only part he says he agrees with is the section awarding him KSh 50 million. 😂😂 Politics can be very interesting.

We do not yet have the full copy of the judgment, but I can share what we submitted to the Court. Our essential argument was that a person who has converted from an SC/ST background into Christianity cannot claim the benefits or protections of the Act... The Court was categorical: once someone converts to Christianity, caste benefits cannot apply, because Christianity does not recognise caste. The decision is also rooted in the 1950 Presidential Order, which has long been part of the statute book. The judgment clearly defines who is entitled to claim benefits under the Act and who is not.
