All right, who wants a robot worm? 🪱 Researchers at Case Western Reserve University developed a robot inspired by earthworms. Worms move by using wave-like muscle contractions called peristalsis. This version of the worm-inspired robot has a flexible outer mesh that can continuously change shape. Using this mesh, the robot's fixed parts can move smoothly between each other, providing power and control. This project is referred to as a "soft hyper-redundant robot," due to its highly flexible nature and ability to adapt to various environments. Made from a heat-responsive polymer combined with rigid panels and small embedded magnets, it can self-fold into shape and then move across surfaces, swim, climb slight slopes, and handle uneven terrain, all without traditional onboard motors.

This robot, called Salto, is inspired by how squirrels leap and balance in trees. Researchers studied how squirrels adjust their movements to stick a perfect landing. They then programmed Salto to mimic these techniques, helping it land safely on narrow surfaces. They programmed it to adjust its posture mid-air, extending or crouching based on its trajectory. Researchers have presented Electrofluidic Fiber Muscles: a new class of artificial muscle fibers for robots and wearables. The new electrofluidic fiber muscles — electrically driven actuators built in fiber format — are described in a recent paper published in Science Robotics. The work is led by Media Lab PhD candidate Ozgun Kilic Afsar; Vito Cacucciolo, a professor at the Politecnico di Bari; and four co-authors. Unlike the rigid servo motors used in most robots, these fiber-shaped muscles are soft and flexible. They combine electrohydrodynamic (EHD) fiber pumps — slender tubes that move liquid using electric fields to generate pressure silently, with no moving parts — with fluid-filled fiber actuators.
