I think I get how you accomplished this. Not bad... But I'd prefer the shader/mesh based methods, as the "snow" here would end up looking extremely unpolished and not very much like actual snow

Yeah, it is just an alternative option. Sometimes, your scene can have tons of materials, or you might need a quick result.

Right, but you can use cryptomatte or shader AOVs to mask out characters and dynamic objects.
