The Supreme Court will hear from Connecticut and Cook County, Illinois, home to Chicago, groups on their bans on “assault weapons.” Cutberto Viramontes and Christopher Khaya have challenged the ban in Cook County along with Firearms Policy Coalition and the Second Amendment Foundation. The Connecticut Citizens Defense League, the Second Amendment Foundation, and 3 citizens have challenged the ban in Connecticut. Lower courts have upheld the laws that ban these “assault weapons” as groups argue they are in violation of their Second Amendment rights.

NEW: Supreme Court unanimously sides with the 2nd Amendment The Supreme Court rules 9-0 saying you can’t disqualify someone from owning a gun because they’re a drug user “It was whether or not you could go after someone who you discovered was a habitual drug user, in this case marijuana, and that disqualified them from owning or possessing a gun” “The court has got a unanimous opinion — nobody's dissenting here, saying that the prosecution of this individual or going after this individual based on his drug usage and gun ownership violates the Second Amendment” Keep in mind this doesn’t mean you can possess the gun while intoxicated on the drug, this just means you can’t be targeted for owning it

A federal court just ruled that suppressors are protected arms under the Second Amendment. Good win. But that’s not even the biggest part. The real story is what this ruling may do to magazine bans, AR bans, and every “hardware” ban anti-gun states have been protecting for years. Because the Ninth Circuit has been saying things like magazines are just accessories. Not arms. Not protected. Basically a fashion accessory for your rifle. But now the Fifth Circuit looked at suppressors and said: No. If it helps you use your firearm for lawful self-defense, it can be protected by the Second Amendment. That creates a problem. A big one. Two federal courts are now looking at the same kind of argument and reaching opposite conclusions. That’s called a circuit split. And that may be exactly what finally forces the Supreme Court to step in. So this isn’t just about suppressors. This could be the case that puts magazine bans and assault weapons bans directly on the Supreme Court’s doorstep. Now be honest: Should suppressors, magazines, and AR-15s all be protected under the Second Amendment? Or should the government get to call them “accessories” and ban them?
