seems over-engineered but something like this open source farming robot FarmBot might be the only way a brown thumb like me can build a garden that survives!

HN doesn't seem to like it. It's expensive - starts at $2800... that's a lot of instacarted produce!

not just deeply over-engineered but actively harmful. the watering function on this is (a) bad for plants and (b) achievable by installing a drip line for a few bucks you should water plants at the base, not from above. When watered from above the leaves are more susceptible to sun scalding, rot, mildew

@farmbotio I want to try this! A bit more expensive than I was hoping for.

@farmbotio Same! Don’t feel like paying a few thousand bucks for it

@farmbotio It’s cool but some drip line on a timer for $50 does this just as well

@farmbotio you can set up an irrigation system that is solar powered and waters from a big bucket for under $100 (i just did it on my deck it took like 30 mins) and i just need to refill the bucket every few days

If you’ve got anywhere sunny in your home or outside, start with a container plant that’s hardy and productive or pleasant. I planted corn in a planter outside in Potrero hill and after just 1 month it’s ans tall as than me! We got a princess flower in another container and my wife’s happy to see that every morning. Barely any effort, just watering each while I wait for water to heat up for coffee in the AM

@farmbotio I think ideally you'd have a mobile robot with an arm that could handle several planters. It's a bit wasteful to have a gantry for a single bed.

@farmbotio can we program it to shoot the weeds with a gun?
