Most of us throw away waste in seconds. But what happens after that depends on one simple choice. At a busy traffic signal in Ahmedabad, members of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation turned an everyday commute into a lesson in responsible waste segregation. Bangalore produces around 7,000 tonnes of waste a day, roughly 3,000 tonnes of that is wet waste. All of it has to be collected, segregated, and processed every single day. A lot of it still ends up badly treated or in a landfill. We got to know the Hasiru Dala Innovations team a few years ago. They've spent years doing the thankless part of this, collecting and segregating waste at scale. But wet waste has remained a problem. Dry waste has buyers. Wet waste goes bad too quickly to store, and composting it usually loses money. Carbon Masters takes that wet waste and turns it into biogas you can cook with. More importantly, they've made a business out of it. Put the two together, and it's fairly obvious. Hasiru Dala has the waste and knows how to sort it. Carbon Masters knows how to generate economic value out of it by generating biogas and organic manure. This problem goes beyond Bengaluru's garbage. India imports about 60% of our LPG and half our natural gas. Turning our own waste into fuel is about as self-reliant as it gets. We need more people working on hard problems like this. That’s also why we’ve backed both Hasiru Dala Innovations and Carbon Masters through Rainmatter by Zerodha. We spent some time at their Harohalli plant to understand how it all fits together for our latest Rainmatter Original. A New Era of Sustainable Waste Management in Nagpur 🌱 Inspected the Nagpur Municipal Corporation's 'Integrated Municipal Solid Waste Processing Plant' at the Bhandewadi Dumping Yard, which is set to turn the vision of a waste-free city into reality. Operated by the international industrial conglomerate KEVA SusBDe, the facility will process 1200 tons of waste generated daily in Nagpur. To be completed in 3 phases, the project will ensure that all daily waste generated in the city is processed using advanced technologies. Through this project, both wet and dry waste will be collected and processed. The treatment process will generate biogas, high-quality compost fertilizer, and fuel pellets from dry waste. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation has allotted 30 acres of land for the initiative and will receive an annual royalty of ₹15,00,000 from gas sales. Directed the administration to extend all necessary support for its successful implementation. The biogas generated through this project will be utilised to supply CNG for 198 city buses. In addition, the project will provide energy pellets required by MAHAGENCO, further contributing to sustainable energy generation and resource utilisation. This landmark project will reinforce Nagpur’s position as a national model for sustainable solid waste management and environmentally responsible urban development. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation has allotted 30 acres of land for the initiative and will receive an annual royalty of ₹15,00,000 from gas sales. Directed the administration to extend all necessary support for its successful implementation. The biogas generated through this project will be utilised to supply CNG for 198 city buses. In addition, the project will provide energy pellets required by MAHAGENCO, further contributing to sustainable energy generation and resource utilisation. This landmark project will reinforce Nagpur’s position as a national model for sustainable solid waste management and environmentally responsible urban development.
