Simpsons Hit and Run reversed engineered from the PS2 game and then rebuilt for web using three.js. This was all done by the amazing GPT-6 Astra model on xhigh reasoning (used a lot of my usage to do this). Best part is it's open source:

Do you know there is actually a PC version of the game... And its source code (for all platforms) was already leaked, right? 👀

Dwayne's profile picture
Dwayne3 days ago

Someone else mentioned that, but no I didn't know that. And honestly, makes it less fun if you have the code. This is Astra decompiling the PS2 machine code and graphics, reimplementing in Javascript. It's fun, this isn't meant to be a true 1:1 port.

Hey Quinn, very intelligent reply champ. Thanks for taking the time to post it. The intelligence level on this app just went up a few more IQ points. Well done.

Could you not spend like 3 minutes of your time debugging?

Dwayne's profile picture
Dwayne2 days ago

Why? The point wasn't to produce a perfect 1:1 port. Ports based on leaked source code already exist. I just wanted to see what Astra could do without source code and just the PS2 iso. You seem very upset. Are you okay?

this sucks ass, it doesn't have any real direction.

Dwayne's profile picture
Dwayne3 days ago

Almost like it's a non 1:1 port of a Playstation 2 game that was never meant to be released on the web. Incredible observation skills. I guarantee anyone attempting the same without AI wouldn't achieve a better result in a couple of hours.

I'm not trashing AI, I'm trashing you. I've used AI a lot for working on my own stuff, but this thing is barely a viewer with nonsensical changes/additions like random small grass batches here and there without any coherent direction with a different shade of green in comparison to the grass texture used by the original game. Not everything needs to be web-based, you could have tell AI to port the game's rendering engine and then improve it to add whatever new fancy effect you might want it to have (as a PC port). three.js is not the right tool for something like this, custom engines are better.

You're literally seeing the early version of the game in this clip. It has evolved significantly since, cutscenes, audio, car physics, chases and other parts of the game. There's no way the entire game can be ported in a couple of hours. And you are completely missing the point and seem to be very triggered over the fact someone wanted to run a fun experiment porting a ps2 game into three.js. This isn't about creating a faithful recreation, it's just seeing it GPT-6 Astra would do it and how far it would go. This clip is where I stopped for usage reasons and shared the progress. Then I took it further and further since. For some reason you're acting like this was an attempt to resurrect the game instead of seeing it for what it really is: some fun. I can tell you're upset, but I promise you that you're going to be okay. This is not the end for you. You will heal from this. You will move on and feel better when you stop letting it trigger you and realize that it's not serious.

What you see in 1st video was after a couple of hours of Astra porting. This is what it looks like now. Blender optimized assets, car physics, police pursuits, missions, cutscenes, audio dialogue and more behaviors. Still very imperfect, but way better than v1. Keep in mind this is not building it from existing source code. People pointed out the PC source code is online, which I wasn't aware of and kind of takes the fun out of seeing Astra pick the game apart and attempt to rebuild it for web. There are still more things missing from the game. But you're looking at in total, around 7-8 hours of Astra picking apart the PS2 game files and attempting to rebuild in an environment this game was never intended to run in. Would the result have been better and taken less time if I used the leaked PC source code? For sure. But it wouldn't have been nearly as fun seeing Astra dig in and try piecing things together from scratch without the source.

what was your instructions to do this, and how much did you steer? I want to do the same for an old PS game

Dwayne's profile picture
Dwayne4 days ago

The initial prompt was super primitive: Please port our Hit and Run.iso game. This is a PS2 ISO file. So you'll need to extract the contents and rebuild it. Would be amazing to make this a three.js web game. Maybe create a subfolder in this directory for it please. -- I had to steer a few times, but was really tiny things like it put signage in upside down and stuff like that. Initially it didn't port the game menu or cutscenes until I told it too.

The source code for this has been out forever. Did it do actual reverse engineering or just a three.js port or the existing code? Maybe do a game that doesn't have the entire codebase already up online.

Epic. I'd be careful publicly sharing the assets as they're based on copyrighted material.

Dwayne's profile picture

The source code and assets for this were already online. Also, it's a super old game. I doubt they care. It's free code.

@Aut4rk "It's free code" This is the attitude of AI influencers when it comes to everything. Footage, music, art. It's all free for the AI bot to steal and slopify. Remember when they pretended to respect copyright?

Simpson Hit and Run source code leaked years ago, no need to create a slopified version of it, nothing to reverse engineer. It could be ported to the web via WASM, just as happened with GTA reVC

Dwayne's profile picture

Astra doesn't care about copyright. Image Gen does, but the model itself for code like this, doesn't push back at all.

Reverse engineering a PS2 game and rebuilding it in three.js is a much stronger test than a clean-room demo. The interesting part is whether the model can preserve behavior while moving across completely different abstractions and runtimes.

@CtrlAltDwayne how much does something like this cost to create? Was the entire project done on a subscription token allotment or an API cost per 100k tokens etc. I have no frame of reference. $10, $100, $500, $1000?

Its funniest as fuck how the only things Gen ai has ever been used for is pointless crap 💀 You could have just emulated the actual ps2 game (which looks better than this) for less time and effort.

Patrick's profile picture

When you say "reversed engineered", do you mean you done something technically specific or just asked Astra to rebuild the game?
