Today genuinely scared me. I have been holding so much in because I wanted to handle this situation quietly and through the proper channels. It’s chaos in Yosemite National Park This is the first summer since Yosemite stopped using their reservation system There have been almost 100,000 more visitors than this time last year It’s so crowded the lines of cards are hours long and people are parking illegally in the meadows that are supposed to be protected “The line of cars goes on and on and on, all waiting to get into Yosemite National Park. People were waiting for like at least hour and a half and once you're inside, the waiting isn't over” By 7.30 am parking can already be at capacity “The entire park, it was impossible to park. There's nowhere to park for anybody. Waiting to find parking, waiting to get on the shuttle — With many getting impatient and just illegally parking wherever they could. There are people pulling onto meadows, pulling off pavement, going off-road” “Environmental Resource Center says it was at least better than this. Without any limits the amount of vehicles, amount of people, it becomes overwhelmed. 🚨Another day, another video of ICE agents illegally detaining a U.S. citizen, and demanding they prove their citizenship… this time in San Bernardino, CA. In the video, ICE agents boxed in a car, at a McDonald’s parking lot, and demanded to see an ID. One person holds up his ID, saying, “Can you see that? United States of America.” The agent responds, “Yeah, I see plenty of fake ones, too.” The man says, “My sh*t ain’t fake.” The agent responds, “I gotta make sure… I’m not going to just take your word for it,” while inspecting the ID. Here’s the thing… this is illegal. You are a U.S. citizen, doing nothing wrong. ICE has no right to seize your ID, or demand proof of citizenship, under these circumstances. Holding a government-issued ID is more than enough, and the agent knows it… but he acts like it isn’t. Then, the agent walks away and passes another agent, who asks, “Did you run it?” You can’t hear what the agent responds… probably something along the lines of, they know their rights so I couldn’t… Since the first agent didn’t run the ID because he doesn’t have the right to…he is a citizen who hasn’t committed a crime… This is why the second agent starts asking more questions, trying to dig for anything they can intimidate people with. They ask whose car it is, how long they’ve had it, if they bought it from someone… Every time, the people refuse to answer. And still, the agents keep leaning into intimidation, before finally letting them go. This is a textbook illegal detainment and harassment. ICE is trying to bully people into giving up information they don’t have to, all while pretending a valid government ID isn’t enough. This is why knowing your rights is important. Don’t let ICE manipulate you, or scare you, into giving information they have no legal right to take.

👉 Posting this feels incredibly vulnerable as I tend not to share many personal things online. But I also know that 1 in 2 people will develop cancer at some point in their lifetime and, of those, 1 in 5 will delay for more than three months before contacting a doctor about symptoms. I nearly became one of those people. Like most others with a busy family and work life, I was tempted to wait until I had more time and headspace before seeing a doctor. I was six weeks away from finishing my new book and I didn't know if I had the capacity to deal with both. Since the diagnosis, I am so grateful that I didn’t delay for long. Speed is our secret weapon when it comes to cancer. The sooner we know it’s there, the better our chances of a good outcome. So, for anyone out there who has noticed something and not yet called their doctor, this is your sign to make it happen. I hope this explains my lack of dm replies and videos being posted over the last few months. Its been a rollercoaster. I’m going to share some of my journey on stories for anyone who wants updates. I am incredibly lucky that this has been caught so early. Of course, nothing is certain just yet but a couple of surgeries and I should be out the other side. That is another reason I am stepping outside of my comfort zone to talk about this. Many people go through this and go on to live full, active and healthy lives. So discovering possible symptoms doesn’t have to be a disaster. It can be an opportunity to get ahead in the fight and beat cancer before it has a chance to take over. I absolutely have my head in the game for the treatment plan ahead, ready to get going next week. I also have a giant stack of video ideas just waiting to be made, so I can’t wait to get back up and running ❤️ If you think it could help someone feel free to share this message ❤️

Congrats to EloShapes.com on their launch! On a similar note, is out of beta and available to the public. A lot of you have been asking me what my plan is now that EloShapes is also doing 3D scans... the answer is: nothing changed! I think that competition is good. I'm a mouse nerd and a LONG TIME EloShapes user, so the more options I get as a user, the better. I really think that my vision and EloShapes, though, is fundamentally different. I've had the domain for FMM for years, I have a much larger platform in mind compared to what I built so far. The 3D scans are the necessary step for my vision, not the end goal: they never were. I am also very proud of the fact that I've been able to scan at least 5 mice in full color EVERY DAY with my own pipeline, and I think I will easily have almost full coverage of the mice people would want on the website within months. Check the video for the mice I've added in just the last few days, all textured. Apart from some of the features I've mentioned before (like the virtual hand/grip), FMM is meant to be kind of a "MyAnimeList" for mice, so that you can share your profile, like this: and then later on leverage this curated list of mice you build for yourself to be shown even more mice you might like. FMM is also a tool for reviewers and anyone that wants to share their opinions on mice. Congrats to EloShapes.com on their launch! On a similar note, is out of beta and available to the public. A lot of you have been asking me what my plan is now that EloShapes is also doing 3D scans... the answer is: nothing changed! I think that competition is good. I'm a mouse nerd and a LONG TIME EloShapes user, so the more options I get as a user, the better. I really think that my vision and EloShapes, though, is fundamentally different. I've had the domain for FMM for years, I have a much larger platform in mind compared to what I built so far. The 3D scans are the necessary step for my vision, not the end goal: they never were. I am also very proud of the fact that I've been able to scan at least 5 mice in full color EVERY DAY with my own pipeline, and I think I will easily have almost full coverage of the mice people would want on the website within months. Check the video for the mice I've added in just the last few days, all textured. Apart from some of the features I've mentioned before (like the virtual hand/grip), FMM is meant to be kind of a "MyAnimeList" for mice, so that you can share your profile, like this: and then later on leverage this curated list of mice you build for yourself to be shown even more mice you might like. The Sanctity of Life — Primary all the RINOs! Not a single word was written or prepared for this speech. A man came up to me immediately after this in tears as I was getting a club soda from the bar. I had no idea this speech and the MNGOP convention, would reveal so much about our party. Both good and bad, both inspiring and horrifying! I always go into convention hoping for the best because the people ultimately get to choose and that I see as a blessing for which we should be grateful. Often the deck is stacked and yesterday was no different. From changing the predetermined speaking order, or not getting the correct time limit for my speech, to having the nominations committee announce a reservation against me to the delegates that I WASN'T abiding by the endorsement. Which was a complete lie, I've been pledged to abide by the endorsement for the last 2 cycles since 2024, including my signed pledge for this 2026 cycle. In fact is was the MNGOP establishment that didn't abide by the endorsement and even spent party money to pay a man (Michael Brodkorb), who endorsed Kamala Harris, to trash me after I was endorsed and nominated. Not a very Republican Party! What was the most shocking though, is that so many delegates voted for Tafoya, who openly refused to abide. About 1/3 if you trust the clickers. Which as an aside WERE A COMPLETE MESS... Imagine a party that wants secure paper ballots but uses electronic clickers at our own convention. Long time MNGOP activist and House Rep. Walter Hudson stood up and pointed out some irregularities before the endorsement began. Aside from all that I was mortified to discover many, too many, delegates actually believe it appropriate to waver on our conservative and Christian principles to "win" the election. On protecting the unborn. In doing so they have declared war on our faith and a pillar of the Christian conservative movement. We have no more back steps to take. Christians have been pushed to the cliff's edge in this country and all around the world. Attacks from the same people who want to destroy this nation. It is time to rededicate this country and nation to God, but it can't just be symbolic or something to piss off liberals. We have to mean it and if we don't start with the unborn we will be undone. I will stand up and set the standard. As for our Navy man Adam Schwarze, who eventually was endorsed on the 6th or 7th ballot... He doesn't currently have his Trident, and that wasn't mentioned as a "reservation" by the nominations committee. He was simply deem "qualified". The trident is between him and the Navy. For me, if you publicly laugh, about killing thousands of people including women and children, or dropping white phosphorus on them... You too have a problem with the sanctity of life. We may have to fight a war, we are currently in a war around the world and here at home. I spent months saving money to take him to the festival. I even did raffles and everything, because I was 13 or 14 years old. When his birthday finally came, I had prepared a surprise for him, organized everything, and planned a special moment. When I gave him the gift, he saw what it was and got kind of weird. Then he told me, ‘Oh, it’s just that I have a family commitment,’ or whatever. Something like that. But he had been saying for months that he wanted to go, so it didn’t make any sense. I said, ‘Okay, fine, nothing happened.’ Since I had the extra tickets, I told a friend, ‘This is your opportunity, come with me.’ She was going to the festival too, so we went together. The Sameer Project has been providing food and water in the North, donate: we will continue to operate in the North as long as we can. We listened to the people - they asked us for help to remain steadfast, to stay on their land. But now they are asking us for a different kind of help - for a chance at survival. Messages and pleas are pouring in. People need help with transportation South, with shelter, with basic necessities. Patients in hospitals are being prematurely discharged because of capacity, amputees with no wheelchairs out on the streets. Families are walking barefoot more than 13 miles / 21 kilometers with no belongings just to escape the bombs. How will they all leave? Who will take them South? Where will they all go? There is no land and no shelter. For the past month we have been preparing for this moment, at the same time hoping it never would come. The Sameer Project secured 4 more parcels of land, more tents for the land, and are working on making them suitable to move to with bathrooms, fencing, and electricity. But of course we cannot help everyone. With over 1 million people in the North we have to triage the most severe medical cases and vulnerable families. We are opening up a new fundraising link to assist. WE NEED YOUR HELP. Because of the scarcity of available resources everything is incredibly expensive: fuel for vehicles, renting trucks, tents, the land itself, food and water for the displaced. The essential needs are endless. We estimate that we will need $750,000 to open the additional camps and to aid in the response to the displacement. This includes rent of the land, land prep (ie, leveling soil), tents for families, fencing, bathrooms, water infrastructure, expansion of the medical point, expansion of the educational tent, transportation fees, and more. We need to provide water and food, medical services, mattresses and essentials, the list goes on. This is the biggest undertaking of The Sameer Project yet, but with your support we can have an immediate impact by providing a safe landing spot for hospital overflow patients, families with disabilities, orphans, the Civil Defense workers and ambulance drivers, mutual aid team members that serve their community - those who are vulnerable and those who will also be able to support others during this horrific time. DHS is telling people to “self-deport,” but when someone actually tries to self-deport, ICE is locking them in private immigration prisons for months, even years. ICE has been targeting former DACA recipients, people who historically would not be held long-term, because detention itself has become the objective. A steady pipeline feeding private prisons that are paid per body, per day. This story shows the other side of the same abuse. Tatjana Vesiolko has no criminal record. She holds a valid Lithuanian passport. Her home country accepts deportations. She received a final order of removal months ago. She didn’t fight it. She mailed her passport to ICE. She has repeatedly asked to buy her own plane ticket home. ICE refused. Instead, she has now spent nearly 11 months locked inside a private detention facility with no bond, no timeline, and no clear explanation. DHS vaguely claims the delay may be tied to a class action lawsuit they refuse to name, one she was never told about and never given the chance to opt out. Immigration attorneys say there are no obvious legal barriers preventing her deportation. This is happening as ICE detains more people than at any point since World War II. The number of people held longer than six months is rapidly climbing, not because removal is impossible, but because ICE is arresting more people than it can process and refusing to let many of them leave. And taxpayers are paying for it. Immigration detention costs at least $150 per person, per day, according to nonpartisan estimates. Holding someone for nearly a year costs tens of thousands of taxpayer dollars, even when that person has no criminal record and is actively asking to leave the country. More than 1,200 people in London have taken part in one of the largest acts of mass civil disobedience in British history, to protest the Palestine Action ban. At 1pm on Saturday, hundreds of protesters, many of them elderly, sat down in Parliament Square and wrote “I oppose genocide. I support Palestine action” on cardboard signs. Among those taking part was Reverend Sue Parfitt, an 83-year-old priest, who was arrested at the first-ever protest against proscription on 5 July, the day it came into effect. The action, organised by Defend Our Juries (DOJ), was designed to pose an “unprecedented simultaneous challenge to all three legal systems within the UK’s constitutional framework”. In a statement released before the protest, the Met police claimed the force had the “officer numbers, custody capacity and all other resources” necessary to arrest everyone. It was forced to backtrack on similar claims last month, speaking of the “entirely unrealistic” challenges it faced in enforcing the Palestine Action ban. On 9 August, 532 people were arrested for holding placards in Parliament Square, in what was at the time the largest mass arrest event in London since 1961 - but it took the police hours, and many hundreds more protesters were able to leave, despite having broken the law. Half of those arrested were over 60 - one was a blind man in a wheelchair. Police dealt with the huge number of arrests last time by processing them nearby in Westminster and granting most arrestees “street bail” - meaning they were released immediately and didn’t need to be transferred to a police station. This time, DOJ told participants to decline street bail, in a bid to push police resources past their limit. More than 1,200 people in London have taken part in one of the largest acts of mass civil disobedience in British history, to protest the Palestine Action ban. At 1pm on Saturday, hundreds of protesters, many of them elderly, sat down in Parliament Square and wrote “I oppose genocide. I support Palestine action” on cardboard signs. Among those taking part was Reverend Sue Parfitt, an 83-year-old priest, who was arrested at the first-ever protest against proscription on 5 July, the day it came into effect. The action, organised by Defend Our Juries (DOJ), was designed to pose an “unprecedented simultaneous challenge to all three legal systems within the UK’s constitutional framework”. In a statement released before the protest, the Met police claimed the force had the “officer numbers, custody capacity and all other resources” necessary to arrest everyone. It was forced to backtrack on similar claims last month, speaking of the “entirely unrealistic” challenges it faced in enforcing the Palestine Action ban. On 9 August, 532 people were arrested for holding placards in Parliament Square, in what was at the time the largest mass arrest event in London since 1961 - but it took the police hours, and many hundreds more protesters were able to leave, despite having broken the law. Half of those arrested were over 60 - one was a blind man in a wheelchair. Police dealt with the huge number of arrests last time by processing them nearby in Westminster and granting most arrestees “street bail” - meaning they were released immediately and didn’t need to be transferred to a police station. This time, DOJ told participants to decline street bail, in a bid to push police resources past their limit. Technically is dead; long live Technically Some bittersweet news for you all today: after 5 years writing Technically and more than 100 posts about everything from APIs to data warehouses to Facebook DNS hacks, today I am (for the most part) shutting the Technically Substack down… …and replacing it with Technically 2.0, an amazing software product I’ve been working with David Krevitt on for the past 6 months. But first… For a newsletter that started with an innocent tweet while I was bored in Haneda airport, this thing has come pretty far. 70K+ subscribers, yada yada. But you’re here for the story so here it is. It was December 2019, I was traveling before moving to SF to start at Retool, and like I said, I was bored. Late 2019 – what an amazing time to start a newsletter! There weren’t that many of them out there. And then came 2020. Everyone was stuck at home with nothing to do but sign up for more and more Substacks, and talk about them on the internet. Every day, another one of your friends was announcing a newsletter on Twitter. It was the golden era, no doubt, and many people like me combined hard work, a good idea, and the old fashioned “right place right time” streak of luck to build a really nice Substack business. I’ll never forget the day Ben Thompson referenced Technically in Stratechery. I must have gotten 50 texts from friends. Everyone was reading Stratechery at the time…it was like becoming a made man. There was this almost communal vibe in the air with these newsletters. Everyone was reading the same stuff, talking about the same stuff. It was a scene is what it was. But by 2022 things were changing. People were outside again, and had less free time to read newsletters. Interest rates were going up, and people were working more (even in offices). In the paid Substack group chats, most of us were reporting stalling or negative growth, even though we hadn’t changed anything on our end. And with 50% churn rates on these subscriptions, if you weren’t growing you were dying. I’m listening to Neil Young’s “After the Gold Rush” as I write this and it couldn’t be more fitting. Although I imagine Mr. Young himself would disapprove of the whole paid newsletter endeavor. What happened to newsletters? David and I call what’s going on “Substack Fatigue” – people are just tired of reading yet another newsletter, let alone paying for one. Newsletters are just not the thing anymore. There are some fast growing news ones focused on AI, but the same story is going to play out in a few years when everything cools down. Political newsletters are fully investing in video and podcasts. Newsletters are not the thing anymore. We rode a cultural wave and the wave is over. You don’t have to die, but you have to adjust. The wrench in this whole story is that Technically was only (very) part time for me. I’m pretty sure at one point I was generating the most revenue on Substack for someone who wasn’t focusing on their newsletter full time. Which is a sick flex no doubt, but was also a huge problem, because I just didn’t have the time or mental capacity to make the big moves required to reverse the trend. Technically started to slowly lose paid subscribers every month, but I was at peace with that. I was entering a new phase in my life, settling down a bit, enjoying spending time on cooking, cocktails, and music. Approaching 30 and feeling really good about everything. It’s OK for some things to be temporary, and I was content with Technically to continue to be useful to people…just not make as much money. But in the back of my head, I always knew that Technically had a lot more potential, and deserved more than I could give it. That there’s no reason this thing couldn’t be a $1M+/year business. I continue to believe that technical literacy is going to be one of the defining social problems of our era, and the progress in AI only makes this even more critical. It should be way more than a newsletter, it should be how everyone learns what the fuck is going on in this digital world. I needed some help. But I had a bad track record of getting people to work on Technically with me. It’s hard to share custody of your child. And I am extremely particular. I’m not always the easiest to work with. Worked with some contractors here and there, but never found a more long term partner. I’m extremely grateful that David Krevitt reached out to me when he did or this paragraph would end here. Instead, after regaling you with my boring tale for many paragraphs now, I can finally share what we’ve been working on since last year. It’s called Technically 2.0. It’s all of the content you know and love, but built as a piece of software specifically aimed at helping people get more technical. No more newsletter – it’s a learning platform now, complete with reading lists, bookmarks, a dictionary, and guided learning tracks. Our goal was to make a Wikipedia kind of experience: click around to follow your curiosity on whatever software you’re learning about. Some personal news: I am running to be mayor of West Vancouver in the Oct. 17 municipal election. Kirk LaPointe Announces Candidacy for Mayor of West Vancouver Says community needs stronger financial discipline, better consultation, and a clearer plan for the future WEST VANCOUVER, BC — Veteran journalist, business executive and community board member Kirk LaPointe is seeking the office of Mayor of West Vancouver, launching a campaign focused on restoring public trust, bringing greater discipline to taxes and spending, strengthening village centres and local business, planning responsibly for housing and infrastructure, and giving West Vancouver a stronger voice at Metro Vancouver.
