I was delighted to commission 71 urban road projects yesterday in Enugu, in fulfillment of the pledge we made to our people who gave us their mandate one year ago. We shall continue to serve Ndi Enugu with every fibre of our being. To make sure that all Trunk A and Trunk B roads in the urban and rural areas are paved, we shall embark on the construction of additional 80 roads, and also see that streetlights as well as water taps are functional. Our rural communities are not left out. We are committed to constructing 10 kilometers of roads in each of our state's 260 wards. We are re-energized to work even harder by the wonderful support from our people. Tomorrow is here!

Adesan Street in Obafemi Owode Local Government is currently undergoing asphalt laying, marking significant progress as we work diligently to deliver this project on time. In our Urban Development and Municipal Affairs departments, we have taken the principle decision that parking on both sides of the road, which has continued illegally for 15 years, will now be regulated. Parking will be allowed only on the designated side of the road, while parking on the other side will not be permitted. Secondly, parking fees are being collected illegally in parking lots, and taxes from these collections are not being paid to the government. These illegal collections must be stopped immediately so that the entire tax amount goes to the government. Also, the helpline number was not only a women’s helpline number; it was a child helpline number. The same number should now be integrated as a women’s helpline number as well. If anyone faces any problem, both the women’s helpline and child helpline numbers should remain active. In both the Women and Child department and the Urban Development and Municipal Affairs department, a call centre should be set up so that the public can call these two departments and share their issues and grievances. She adds, "Lastly, wherever there is pollution, we have seen over the last 15 years in Bengal, in Kolkata and Asansol, that garbage is lying everywhere and is not being cleaned. Now this responsibility is also being given to the public through geotagging. We have developed an app where people can send geotagged pictures, and within two hours the corporation or municipality will come and clean the area. But along with this, I also need the cooperation of the public. We should not throw garbage on the roads. Prevention is better than cure. Why do our cities look dirty, with garbage everywhere? Here, a child is showing a banner about the penalty for littering, but his parents ignore it. The same parents will later complain on social media and blame the authorities for not keeping our cities clean. We often complain, but we don't take responsibility ourselves but expect others to do so. We drive on the wrong side of the road and then complain about drivers who do the same. We throw garbage and then complain about unhygienic conditions. This is a result of social norms. We tend to do what others are doing, and the police cannot catch everyone, giving people an unfair advantage. This mentality trickles up the ladder, and nobody takes responsibility, leading to the mess we see in our cities. Our airports are clean because no one throws garbage there, and there is a positive demonstration of social norms. A few good people are not enough to change society.

Our seniors, veterans, children, and people with disabilities are not “garbage.” And, neither is our fight to protect the programs we depend on. We don’t work for billionaires. We work for the people. And, we will continue to fight like hell for them.

The rains have started, and we urge all motorists driving within Nairobi County to exercise extra caution. We are putting all hawkers on notice, especially those operating within the CBD and irresponsibly dumping waste particularly tea and coffee hawkers. Their careless disposal of garbage is blocking our stormwater drainage systems, which is a major cause of flooding in the city whenever it rains. Developers and all residents are reminded to strictly follow the law and avoid encroaching on drainage channels. All illegal structures constructed on top of or along drainage systems will be removed. We are committed to restoring order in Nairobi. We are also warning those who have encroached along riverbanks and riparian zones move away immediately before you are swept away by the floods. We shall move in and demolish all illegal structures along riparian areas. These zones are not meant for settlement or construction and must be protected. These decisions may not be popular, but they are necessary. Fixing our drainage system is not just about today it’s about building a better, safer city for tomorrow.
