42 years ago this month: Summer Games was released on the Commodore 64! (Epyx, 1984) The game that launched an entire legendary series Up to 8 players competing in events like 100m Dash, Platform Diving (my favourite event), Skeet Shooting, 4x400m Relay, and the infamous Pole Vault (so hard). It was the game my parents and sister all came together to play, creating lifelong memories. Even though it was the OG of the series, it is still one of the best-feeling multi-event sports games ever made on 8-bit. Who else still gets competitive over the diving scores? Did you score straight 10s?

The original was the first video game to reflect the gameplay of table tennis, as opposed to earlier simplifications like Pong. Did you know Xenon was actually the very first game from the legendary Bitmap Brothers? This 1988 vertical shooter on the Commodore Amiga kicked off their iconic run with that signature metallic look: smooth scrolling, the awesome tank-to-fighter jet transformations, massive bosses, and pure high-energy action that defined early 16-bit greatness. Absolute classic that still holds up today! Did you know the digitized face that pops up saying "Level One" was Bitmap Brother Eric Matthews! Xenon was also the first Amiga game ever to crack the UK Top 40 software charts which was usually dominated by Commodore 64 and Spectrum games. The game is legendary but from memory after you blasted your way through the game, it just looped back to the start, (correct me if my memory is faulty) those sort of endings were a major disappointed especially when you have dedicated so many hours into the game! Do you remember playing it?

When I was a kid, I learned SO MANY math and computing concepts from Logo on the Commodore 64. Recursion was a big one. As a seasoned technologist, I'm still blown away by how much they packed into a single 170kb floppy to give a simple 8-bit computer so much power and flexibility. It's only now that I've started playing with the built-in assembly language interfaces in Logo. Something that was completely over my head as an 11 year old. Here's the kind of thing I did a lot of in the 80s (and even understood most of what I was doing).
