Did you know the original The Legend of Zelda was first released on the Famicom Disk System, not NES? Because it came on a floppy disk format, it allowed players to SAVE their progress — a groundbreaking feature at the time. Later on, it was re-released in NES and Famicom cartridge form, and that’s probably the version most gamers experienced first. The floppy disk version of Zelda is originally yellow, but I swapped the shell using a gold cartridge from another game and made myself a golden Zelda floppy disk. Pretty cool, right?

Randomized layouts inspired by Rogue, early use of digitized speech, smooth somersault animation (Dennis used a book about athletics as drawing reference) and that checkerboard puzzle which is like the Simon toy (lower to higher pitch) giving a password. On top of all that, the actual platform gameplay is really solid. Also available for Apple II, Atari 7800, ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, and Master System. Did cameos in other Data East titles, like Bad Dudes and Fighter's History, becoming a kind of cult mascot for the company. Ported to NES, C64, ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, Mac OS and DOS.

ROBOCOP for arcade (Data East/1988), classic run-and-gun platformer based on the 1987 movie. It was very popular, leading to various home versions loosely based on it, for computers such as the ZX Spectrum and C64. Made by Ocean Software, the computer versions were major hits, specially in the UK.

R-Type was famous for its stunning graphics and was one of the most impressive shoot ’em ups of its time. Most people know the PC Engine port, but it was also released on the much less capable MSX hardware. Back then, when the hardware gap was too large, developers often had to heavily rearrange the game to make it work. However, the MSX version really stands out for its effort to stay as faithful to the arcade original as possible.

5 facts you didn't know about Kung-Fu Master, the classic 1985 Commodore 64 game from Data East (Developed by Berkeley Softworks): 1) On level 1, you could hold down the Shift Key and G for a gun, as seen in the video. This only worked on level 1. 2) An add-on to the gun cheat: press Shift and G and stand still for 1 second to show "By Chris Hawley" and then reset to the start. 3) Chris Hawley never made another game. 4) The USA Floppy disk was a Flippy Disk. On one side was the Commodore 64 version and on the other (flip it over) had the Apple II version. 5) The game is loosely inspired by the Jackie Chan movie Wheels on Meals. Have you watched it, and do you see the similarity? Bonus fact: You may recognize the developer, Berkeley Softworks, from GEOS. This game and Karate Champ were the only two games they made before creating the very successful GEOS for the C64.
