Ghost Sweeper Mikami is a game for the Super Famicom released exclusively in Japan in 1993. It's an action-platformer based on the anime/manga series of the same name. Natsume is known for other high-quality action titles on the NES/SNES and this is a hidden gem. No language knowledge is required, the gameplay is straightforward.

Donkey Kong Country looked impossible in 1994 because Rare built its visuals on Silicon Graphics workstations. The same kind of computers used for movie CGI like Jurassic Park and Terminator 2 were helping create sprites for a 16-bit SNES game.

Blackthorne (1994) for the SNES is a "cinematic platformer". Developed by Blizzard (then known as Silicon & Synapse), and published by Interplay, it's a "Prince of Persia with guns". The SNES version had some of its gore effects censored in comparison to the PC/DOS release. Re-released for the Switch, PS4, Windows, and Xbox One as part of the Blizzard Arcade Collection (2021).

This Niche Game is Ex-Zodiac, a 3D rail shooter inspired by 90s classics! The fast-paced rail shooter harkens back to chonky polygon classics and has you play as protagonist Kyuu, a pilot fighting an intergalactic terror organization plaguing the Sanzaru Star System~ Ex-Zodiac currently features 11 levels and 6 bonus levels each with a boss fight, with more planned for its full release. The game also has a pumping, period appropriate 16-bit style soundtrack!

I love what's possible these days, where this indie developer is making an action platformer based on a 90s anime. It looks amazing and the fact that it's a video game is amazing! This is Samurai Pizza Cats: Blast from the Past!, definitely one to watch

Ubik (1998) is a video game loosely based on Philip K. Dick's 1969 novel. Released by Cryo Interactive for the PlayStation and Windows PCs, it's an action/strategy game where you (as Joe Chip) train and lead a squad to take on the Hollis Corporation. It's strong on atmosphere and does riff on Ubik's main themes quite well, but it's a slow game to play and on the PlayStation the 3D can be a bit clunky.

Showa American Story, a new game that really caught my attention: 1. A post-apocalyptic America heavily influenced by Japanese culture, creating one of the game's most unique settings. 2. You play as Choko, a girl who comes back from the dead and travels across the United States searching for answers. 3. The game features fast-paced combat with melee weapons, firearms, zombies and bizarre enemies. 4. It mixes Japanese and American influences with strong inspiration from 80s and 90s pop culture. #ShowaAmericanStory #PS5

Asterix for the Sega Master System is a high-quality 8-bit platformer released in 1991 by Sega. With good graphics, responsive controls and distinct character mechanics (you start with Asterix then change to Obelix later, etc.), it's another late gem for the system that was positively received. Released in Japan, Europe and Brazil, it was unsurprisingly omitted from the North American market (probably because the comic book isn't popular there).

Heroes of Might and Magic III is easily one of the best round-based strategy games ever made. Considering all the greats from the 90s era, I think the Heroes of Might and Magic franchise is among the very, very top. Incredibly beautiful and detailed graphics, a wonderful soundtrack, and classic turn-based gameplay; all that made for perfect late night sessions that usually went on for way too long. It was the stereotypical "maybe just one more round" game that kept on going... if you've been there, you know. Heroes of Might and Magic is one of the longest living franchises in gaming history, now entering its 31st year, with the first release in 1995 and latest release in 2025 (Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era). If you were/are a turn-based strategy fan, I bet you played it. I miss New World Computing...

Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie (Winkysoft/1993) is a visually stunning and fast-paced 2D horizontal shoot 'em up for the Super Famicom. It stands out for pushing the hardware to its limits, offering gorgeous 16-bit graphics and smooth scaling effects. Remains Japan-exclusive primarily due to decades of international copyright gridlock, but can be easily played on SNES simply by removing the two small plastic tabs inside the console's cartridge slot (most 2nd hand consoles in my country had them already removed, we don't even ask or think about it).
